I'm trying to figure out where these residence halls are. My daughter will be a Therapeutic Recreation major, so I thought these looked like they might be good for that. But, I can't tell where they're located (other than Northwest.) They don't have any photos of the actual dorms. Are they your basic doubles? Also, would they be considered a fun place for freshmen to live? Any thoughts?

I’m pretty certain Fitness and Wellness are in Briscoe this year. They are basic doubles. I think Sports and Society is in Briscoe also. Briscoe is the next dorm slated for renovations. There is currently no AC in either tower. IU trustees meet this week and the Briscoe renovation is on the agenda.

Thanks, Cal! I was checking out some of the walking times from some of these halls to other buildings or Sample Gate. Those are no 5 minute walks! We’re talking 18 minutes for some! I wonder how far the HYPR building is from the Northwest neighhborhood.

Here are pictures of Briscoe and its facilities (as they currently are, before renovations):

Currently, Sports & Society is the second floor of McNutt Bordner. Fitness & Wellness will be in Briscoe Gucker next year. Collins LLC is, obviously, in Collins. I have a lot of friends on the Sports & Society floor and I love their floor. Just a good mix of people there, nothing really to do with the LLC, but it seems to have attracted a great crowd - although a little too much fun sometimes HPER is about 12 minutes from Northwest, same with the SRSC. It’s about a 20 minute walk to the Sample Gates from Northwest as well.

Thanks, ElizaB. I wonder if Sports and Society will be in the same building next year. Hmmm…I’ve heard a not-so-nice description of McNutt from a student who was describing all the dorms. He called it McSlut. That’s BAD!! I’m not sure I want my daughter staying there in that case. On the other hand, I try not to believe everything I hear. You did say they have “a little TOO much fun sometimes” My daughter enjoys a good party like the next student…but not 24/7. She does know that she’ll probably have to study in the library or lounge. I would hope she can cozy up on her dorm bed on a cold, wet night with a book or her computer, though. IS that even possible in Northwest dorms?? LOL She’s expressed a lot of interest in the Sports and Society thematic dorm, so if it’s McNutt–then that’s the way it has to be.

I can see with all the walking, the “Freshman Fifteen” might not be such an issue!

Yeah, that “McSlut” comment is from about 2004–but “McSloppy” might be a more apt description in recent years. My son was in that dorm in 2006-2007 and his major complaint was that people who were in there (some people, not all) didn’t take care of the place, but would “trash” the bathrooms on various occasions (usually after coming back from a party drunk). I think that is one of the reasons they brought the Business Honors group to that dorm this year (which they are continuing next year).

It’s not the Business Honors group. The Kelley LLC requires an application to get in, but you don’t even have to be majoring in business (I know someone who’s here and is not majoring in business)! You don’t have to be a direct admit either.

It’s located in McNutt Crone, and we keep it pretty nice. One floor’s center lounges was closed by their RA for trashing it, but it was really just one guy who did it. There are troublemakers, but that really isn’t the norm, at least not in the KLLC.

Business students’ philosophy seems to be, work hard, play hard.

I don’t party though. On one occasions, I found others’ disruption enough for me to call the center desk and have an RA come to write them up. It was a Tuesday night–it’s not like I report people on Fridays, you know? Week nights in the KLLC though are generally really quiet by 11pm.

I love the KLLC, though, and I plan to be a part of it next year as program liaison (a position that only the KLLC has).

McNutt or the Nut House (Nutt? House), as I’ve also heard it, can get crazy on the weekends. But I’d imagine most dorms do, too. Don’t let the name or repuation of McNutt affect your daughter’s decision to live in the LLC of her choice.

She went ahead and applied for her housing today. If she gets her first choice, it will be Sports and Society (mostly for some of the fun events they have listed) and I know that’s in Northwest…probably McNutt next year? Second choice is Outdoor Adventure in Central. So, we shall see! Hopefully, she can stay balanced!

Yes, McNutt does have a party reputation. It’s where a lot of out-of-staters live and a lot of the people there end up involved in Greek life. But honestly it can get crazy anywhere…I’ve been in Read and Teter on the weekends and they’ve been out of control. Sports and Society would be a great choice, if it’s anything like it is this year, she’ll love it!

Thanks for the encouraging words, ElizaB! It all sounds good. :)
