Where can a history major get you?

I love all kinds of history and I think that's what I want to study.

But what's it good for?

The only thing that really comes to mind is law school. It's an option I guess, but what else is there?

I suppose a history could turn into graduate history work leading to writing/researching/teaching, but I don't think that's really me either.

-History professor.
-Government jobs.
-Advanced research which can lead to book writing and documentary making.

That's all you're allowed to do.

Just kidding. You can essentially go into any field with a history degree.

I-banking, consulting, foreign service...

I was a history major and now am in graduate school for international relations (doing international history and a regional focus on Europe), I hope to work in a think tank or for an NGO.

IMHO a History major IN AND OF ITSELF, does not open many doors. That is not to say you shouldnt do it, just be aware of what you need to do. For example, jospehine is leveraging her degree into a grad program.... ditto law school. But if you want to pursue business -for example - the history degree and an MBA or some really interesting internships can get you going in an interesting direction

if you want to better your chances of getting a job with a degree in history u should take a second major or a minor like business or get interships while in school

You can do anything with a history major that just requires a college degree. A friend's son works for a major wine distributor and does quite well. Law school is pretty obvious, or just politics in general. If you really dig deep into it, you'll be able to have wonderful conversations at parties on just about anything. With an MBA you could go into business, perhaps focusing on a country or region you particularly like. Antiques, art, artifacts, rare books, import/export. Lots of stuff.
