Hi!! I’m trying to find colleges that often offer substantial merit scholarships to students with stats like mine because I don’t think I’ll qualify for financial aid. I have a 33 ACT and 4.1 weighted (3.85 unweighted) GPA. I want to major in journalism/communications if that helps with matching schools to me! Thank you so much!
How big of a scholarship would you need? What’s the max you’d be able to pay per year?
@PengsPhils Thankfully I have a college fund, so I could pay about $20,000 a year through that.
Did you take the PSAT? What was your score?
What is your in-state school? Why do you say you will not get any FA? Have you run the net price calculators at a few different schools?
Sadly 20K not be enough for many schools that offer merit scholarships, which are often private and around 60K. Even with 30K scholarship, there’s still a 10K gap. (Example: BU and Northeastern have good programs but offer scholarships of 20-30K for 65K a year schools).
Here’s a good compilation of info that may give some options: http://blog.prepscholar.com/guaranteed-scholarships-based-on-sat-act-scores
Edit: **** is prepscholar
@Studious99 I did not take the PSAT.
@PengsPhils My in-state school is University of Wisconsin-Madison. I would be happy to go there, but I would prefer to go out of state. My parents’ income is high to qualify for financial aid, but I do have a sibling in college. I don’t know if that has any impact. I have run the net price calculator at NYU because it was my dream school forever, but I kind of gave up on it after seeing how expensive it would be. Thank you for the link; some schools I’m interested in are included in the list which is reassuring!
A sibling in college might make a difference… depending. How many years will your parents have 2 children in school? Run the NPC for schools that meet full need- NYU does not. Your in-state public is excellent… you may get enough merit to some public schools but in my opinion it would be silly to go since your in-state option is so desireable.
You can look here http://competitivefulltuition.yolasite.com/
OP - Ohio State gives generous merit awards that often bring the cost down to what your parents would like to pay. The problem with merit at many schools is that even if you get $20,000 … it may not be enough… and $20,000 is not easy to get.
Make sure going OOS is not to a lesser school, you have local options that other kids pay good money for. Auto tuition schools won't be better than your best instate option.
Run the NPC at a few more schools - NYU is known for terrible FA, so you may fare better in FA elsewhere.
You should run the NPC for Emerson College in Boston.
