Anyone know a good way of seeking out a research / internship opportunity at a hospital or a medical school? I see people having done research at place a or place b, and have an internship at place c. How can someone who aspires to go to medical school find these opportunities? Is it the good grades, the connections, or what?

Start by just asking. Call them and ask if they have any such programs in place for students. If not, talk to one of the higher ups and ask if they can set something up for you. Or just email professors/researchers to ask if they'd be willing to take an undergrad.

Talk to professors at your school and see if they know of any internship programs or people who are currently looking for someone else in their lab.
