Where can Kid with 3.57 get in realistic way

My child will end up with 3.57 UW adding freshman year 12 APs and 1470 SAT . If only looking at Sophomore and Junior will be 3.75 UW. Mentioned both as seems UC system only takes Sophmore and Junior year grades. She has awesome resume. Please suggest as she is getting nervous add on Covid admission process.

The UC and Cal State system use only 10-11th grades in their admission decisions. Both have a specific calculation for their GPA.

UC’s will consider unweighted, capped weighted (8 semester Honors points) and Fully weighted UC GPA’s (unlimited Honors points).

The Cal states only use Capped weighted UC/CSU GPA.

Here is the calculator: GPA Calculator for the University of California – RogerHub

What is her intended major?
What is her college budget/year?
What are her geographic/location preferences?
Private or Public University? Small, Medium, Large? Sports/Greek life?
California Resident?

As per calculator she has 3.8 UW and Weighed 4.27 .
Major - Public Policy/Econ/ Social work. (Main aim is Law)

Arizona Resident

Preferred UC locations
UCLA
UC SD
UC Irvine
UC Berkeley
USC

She is varsity cross country runner places top 25 in state . Greek life un decided.

Thank you

The UC’s offer little to no financial aid to OOS students so with Law school as a possibility, is $65K/year affordable?

Being recruited for X country could be help.

She looks like a competitive applicant as long as she meets the a-g course requirements. UC’s have not made a decision on their test policy for next year’s admission so they could be test blind or test optional.

2020 Freshman admit rates for UC GPA of 4.20 or above capped weighted and not major specific:

UCB: 37%

UCLA: 38%

UCSD: 78%

UCSB: 81%

UCD: 86%

UCI: 60%

USC would might be a better option since they offer more FA (need and merit based).

Thank you !!
Sorry new to it can you please brief A-G requirements??

What is your budget? If law school is likely, you might want to budget for that also.

As an Arizona resident ASU seems sort of obvious, and quite a good choice.

I agree that ASU and Barrett Honors college would be an obvious choice.

ASU is fabulous for STEM for sure but humanities is not that strong. ASU is in our list but UC is her dream. Finance can be handled if she gets in . Thank you!!

Thank you went through the link provided above and she meets all.

ASU Barrett is default . Her dream school is NYU or UC schools.

You are awesome thank you

NYU is another high cost, stingy with FA school. Just make sure she is aware of any budget limitations (if any) before applying instead of after where a “dream” school could become a nightmare.

Agree. We are still contemplating all options. With her final grades 3.57 including freshman what options we have . In state and UC seems reachable. She has Stanford in mind too but not sure of there selection criteria. Looking for options in East coast and Texas . Please suggest.

Thank you so much for help it has been so relieving.

As a fellow west coaster, actually a CA resident not Arizona, I applied to both East Coast and West Coast schools. Your UC choices are great, all strong in Poli Sci, (My brother is majoring in Poli Sci with the intention to go to Law School, his top UC’s were the ones listed above). For east coast political science/law I suggest:
University of Delaware: Not necessarily known for political science, but for out of state students they offer a lot of merit aid
University of Maryland: More of a match/reach for your daughter, but if she applies EA has stellar ec’s, it is only a half hour outside DC, with a lot of internships available and a great program
University of Pittsburgh: With your daughter’s test score, she might get into their GAP Law program as a freshman

Other area schools:

  • University of Wisconsin Madison: Not in any of the areas you mentioned but they admit a good deal of OOS students and are strong in political science
-University of Texas Austin: The go-to Texas university. Very strong in political science/law, but very few OOS get in

I applied mostly to public flagship schools, so I am not that keen on private schools. I learned a lot from applying this year, and my brother is a Political Science Major, so if you have any questions please ask!

It would help if you listed your budget for college. Making suggestions is all well and good but if the schools suggested are unaffordable, then you and the CC posters are just spinning their wheels.

To be truly honest, even though Stanford does not use Freshman grades in their recalculated GPA, the whole transcript will be considered and with a possible 3.75 unweighted GPA, Stanford will be High Reach with a 5% acceptance rate for 2024 applicants.

I might target some private CA universities instead since with her SAT, possible merit aid might bring down costs. University of San Diego, Santa Clara University and Occidental College come to mind.

Budget : We don’t want budget to be a constrain but yes any financial aid is a help. So basically we can manage.

She is winner of American Spirit award in Youth leadership do you think that can help ???

Thank you !! Thank you for suggesting University of Maryland and UT Austin we will add to our list.

If you are thinking east coast and poli sci/law school maybe GWU in DC - they can actually be quite generous with aid especially to geographically diverse applicants
