FWIW, there’s another Roosevelt kid in the tour now, Damon GIllespie. He was in the Bdwy cast and got moved over to the tour when the show closed. (I just know because he and my son are friends.)

Josh Assor did not go to college. He is an incredibly talented dancer from Canada who has had a terrific career already at his young age, in various Canadian productions including Stratford, on North American tours, and on Broadway.

Yay a new list, we’ve been lacking in lists lately. Thanks ManVan!

From my understanding, they had a really rough time finding men of the right type for this show. It was one of the only times I saw a Broadway show casting at summer stock auditions. Lists are great, lists are helpful. But for this show, you had to be a very specific type and if you were it didn’t matter where you came from.

A few years back, we had the good fortune to talk to an NYC casting director (not sure he cast this particular show) as we were looking forward to S’s “possible” future career trajectory. He said that given the current “glut” of fine and available singer/dancer/actors, for a show like this he was able to audition for a top group of dancers, and then from that group audition for the best singers to assemble a cast. He also said that one of the “conceits” of Broadway is that you can have 30-year-old men playing 17-year-olds. I’m sure that for this show being relatively short, looking/sounding young and having killer dancing/acrobatic skills are the “price of admission” for casting consideration.

Demarius is a current Rider student - rising Junior – he’s taking off a year to do the show.

I think that what Voice Teacher said applies to every show and at every level. I think the point is about type. My D was recently brought in at the final callback for a lead role in a regional premiere because the director knew she fit the type. (Didn’t get it but…) This was after seeing a lot of extremely talented singers/actors, some of whom are BFA college graduates and some not. There are a lot of different types of shows/roles out there. Knowing your type and owning it are really going to help!! One of the kids cast in Newsies is from around here and works with my Ds vocal coach. It was about his personality. Sure he can sing and act, but so can many other young boys.

I don’t know the names, but I have been told that several of the “Newsies” cast went to Ithaca.

Many of these actors first met the Newsies people at SETC, as did a few of the late Broadway additions.

Newsies, Spring Awakening, and a few others looking for young actors have done this as of late.
