My kids applied for financial aid at all schools.
A number of schools to which they were accepted offered very nice merit scholarships as well as need based grants.
Most schools were visited but some were not.

Dusquene U - my d never visited. Was awared a very nice merit scholarship and a very nice need based grant. After she sent in her notice that she would not be enrolling - they responded with an increase in her merit award.

SLUMOM, I knew you had looked for a few kids…just was noticing how many of your schools are ones that my D is/has been interested in, and since you had recommended AU, I thought that maybe our Ds had a lot in common!

Not really sure what GPA D finally graduated with but believe it was probably about low to 3.2. She was asked to leave elite private HS after her junior year & decided to get her GED & start local community college in what would have been her senior year. Her 1st semester there she got a 3.8 & applied as a transfer to USoCal. She bombed 2nd semester at CC (again due to chronic health issues) but was still accepted as a spring admit & matriculated Jan 2009 as 2nd semester sophomore.
By that time, I believe her college GPA may have risen back to near 3.0 She has done well at USC 3.3? & is very happy to be returning & applying to the particular school she hopes to get her degree in (admitted in sociology which switched to undecided & now switching to cinema). She is full-pay. This was the only college app she has completed (other than CC & one her CC had her complete to be co-enrolled in flagship U, where she just completed summer school in German for her language requirement).
Her HS encouraged her to complete 2 years of college before submitting any transfer application & is surprised that she’s where she is now.

I will be a senior this year and I have a 3.5 GPA with a mix of honors/non-honors courses. Unfortunately, my highest ACT score is a 23 (low mainly due to math section). I have been looking at a wide variety of colleges with American University being my top choice. However, I’m not sure what other schools to look at. I’d like to go to a small LAC in the Northeast with a solid IR program (if possible). Does anyone have suggestions?

Son now starting his sophomore year at American - SIS. Started first sememster freshman year in the Washington Mentorship Program. Graduated in 2008 from rural regional high school w/3.2, some honors, and 2 AP courses (scored a 5 on one, a 4 on the other). Scored 1710 (M, CR and Writing) on the SAT (took it twice) and had some overseas experience with an international children’s organization. Also admitted to CU-Boulder (fall) and UMass-Amherst (spring semester). Waitlisted at St. Olaf and URichmond

I just want to add that American U is not a sure thing for kids in this range. My daughter who I posted about earlier (3.0 unw, 1800s SATs, URM, very good extracurriculars, lots of Honors, 1 AP) was not accepted at AU which was a top choice for her and fit in well with her extracurriculars. I do think that our great financial need hurt her there.

I must add that our expected parental contribution may have had an effect on the admission decision, although i don’t (and probably will never) know for sure. In the meantime we’re on the “AU” diet - lots of leftovers and pasta, and brownbag lunches

Oldest son graduated HS 2006, GPA around 3.1 unweighted, SAT’s 1200 - M, CR (I don’t remember writing- none of the schools considered it since it was the first year using it) ACT around 26. Took mostly honors classes and 2 AP’s, Eagle Scout Did not qualify for financial aid, except for workstudy at a couple of colleges

Accepted - Allegheny with merit, Towson University of Maryland, Champlain College, Principia College with merit, Roanoke College with merit, Millersville University of Pennsylvania. Waitlisted at Juniata and University of Vermont.

This is a great thread!!! CC stats chat can be so demoralizing/anxiety-producing because it focuses on a sliver of the real world and this thread demonstrates that kids who are ordinary mortals have lots of options…

HS GPA 3.0, one AP no honors, SAT 1220/1600. Required financial aid. Admitted-Siena (Loudonville, NY), Dickinson College, State U (as instate). U of Southern Maine, Keene State College (Merit ad), Suny Plattsburgh, and Springfield College. Chose Siena better financial aid then Dickinson.

My Post #10, UCONN & UVM were OOS. UCONN-double legacy.
We always apply for FA. I left off American University & Alfred University. (two AU’s)
In the state of Maryland we have historical ancestral ties. (Ancestors who served Maryland in government) (Hood College & Goucher College)

What I think helped- His Math score was over 700 and he was male applying to schools with more females. Interesting EC/Community Service in Outdoor education. With Willamette I think a strong visit helped. He applied EA and was deferred to the regular decison round.

Yes! They have tons of options - especially if they are involved in leadership activities, sports and/or they have decent SAT’s - over 1800.
There are many many schools that offer these kids merit scholarships as well - you just have to search a little bit.
