I am a UG at CSULB studying history and just recently decided to pursue a masters degree/teaching credential at NY (Preferably CCNY or Hunter's College).

I have no EC or research done and have a low GPA (3.07) and wanted to build up my involvement in the field.

I know volunteer work are seldom looked at and was wondering where can I find researches to become involved in? and what kind are the best for history majors? I don't mind whether or not I get paid to become involved, I just want to partake in them.

Also any hints/input on further knowledge to assist in strengthening my knowledge in History Master's programs would be lovely.

Thanks!

Why are you looking at two OOS schools in New York when there are a number of good history programs at CSU and UC schools? You’re unlikely to find any funding with that GPA, therefore you could save money staying in-state.

You should talk to your professors about preparing for graduate work in history. That may involve writing a senior thesis or research project, exposing you to the skills involved in archival research and historiography.

If you want a graduate degree in social science education, you don’t need to do research. There are other things that will make you competitive for the program.

If you want an MA in history, I’m not sure about that, but you wouldn’t need as much as if you were doing a PhD program. Probably an independent study or thesis would suffice. Volunteer work counts if it’s related.
