SUNY Buffalo may be a place worth checking out if he likes.a big school.
Clemson has a lot of radical liberal professors and activist students. The engineering college and maybe agriculturec college are probably the only ones that are majority conservative students.
I don’t know what UVU is, but the others have club lacrosse only. U Utah is converting to a D1 team for 2019. There aren’t many varsity men’s teams in the west (just DU).
UVU is Utah Valley University, which is club (MCLA) lacrosse.
The Air Force Academy also has NCAA D1 lacrosse. There are a few others at the NCAA D2 and D3 levels.
Nice to see some new posts on this thread. My son will be taking the ACT in Dec. I suspect he is going to get a 32. He has been getting 34 in both Reading and Science, and his Math is now up to 31. Only his English score is out of whack, at 28. We are working on that. So I am feeling more optimistic. He also took the PSAT and thought it was easy. Based on that, he is going to do the SAT too, because he may in fact do better. He hought English was much easier on the SAT than the ACT.
Can anyone suggest a few reach schools for him? I think Clemson is a reach. Any others?
Miami of Ohio, Richmond, USC (California), Stanford, Vanderbilt–not sure how reachy you want?
I think your son is interested in larger public universities?
University of Maryland- CP
UNC ( reach for OOS)
UF
U of S Carolina
U of Georgia *
UT- Austin *
- more students from our northeast HS are beginning to apply
Not sure how far ( distance) or reachy you want to go; not sure if every school fits your criteria of casual, non hipster, jock etc… but I am reasonably sure most students can find their niche.
@Booajo , thanks, but I have to laugh. He would never dream of applying to a school like Stanford or Vandy.
USC is out. He doesn’t want to be in a city, really. Though he would like the football scene. Maybe Miami, have to take a look. @twogirls , maybe UNC. We are considering privates too.
Just to recap:
Public or private
He wants school spirit and easy access to outdoor activities, especially for the winter.
Not preppy, not hipster. Normal is good. Laid back and casual.
Doesn’t care about Greek life, but we are not into it and any school with too much Greek life is not something I want for him.
Ideally would like to play club lacrosse.
No intellectual atmosphere. Not at all interested in prestige.
Thinks he would possibly be interested in business, Econ, criminal justice, intelligence, history.
Is very into the idea of being offered merit money (I relaize that will only be possible at a few schools.)
We would like smaller class sizes, decent business school (he might be leaning that way), and good career center/alumni network. Ideally not a huge party school.
I have to say, except for the lack of winter sports, Clemson ticks all of the boxes for a reach.
The ones that are on the long list so far:
UNH
UVM
Gonzaga
U Denver
SUNY New Paltz
Probably another SUNY
Clemson (I think)
Maybe U San Diego?
We still have to investigate others that have been mentioned down thread. Any other suggestions for a reach?
UConn?
Wake Forest?
UNC checks some of his preferences… but not all or most.
It may be hard (?) to find a school that checks all the boxes?
Definitely, @twogirls . He knows he will have to compromise. TBH, he loved UNH and that ticks a lot of boxes, plus it should be a safety for him. He can look at Wake Forest. I think U Conn is too close to home.
Colorado State has merit though better on the biking front than other sports.
Wake Forest is a great school. The “no intellectual atmosphere” is throwing me… :-?
@twogirls ,maybe I should explain it more. He is a smart kid, but he doesn’t see himself in a school where kids are are very intellectual and really into academics and studying. However, he actually likes engaging in class discussions a lot. He loves his Theory of Knowledge and IB Psych classes because they are discussion-based.
I guess the antithesis of a school he would like would be U Chicago, Reed, any Ivies or super reaches, Swarthmore, Amherst, JHU, and the like. Not that he would even get in. He likes intelligent conversation, but braniacs are not his cup of tea. Is that more clear?
Hmmm yes I do understand!
How about St Lawrence?
UNH is a very comfortable popular choice. The kids we know that go there are very happy (and you get to stay in Portsmouth if you visit.)
What about Penn State?
He should apply DUS (Undecided) if he’s leaning toward business, but if he’s sure he wants economics, intelligence, etc, he could apply to Liberal Arts and take advantage of the Paterno Fellows program, which gives him extra advising and support and puts him into small Honors classes with the Schreyer students (and if he does well in those can lead to Schreyer admission).
Clemson is known as one as the most conservative Universities in the us though - not TAMU but close and certainly way more than all others on his list. Since there have been a rise of new groups that call themselves conservative, it may be something he may want to check out. Can he do an overnight?
What about Boulder? Montana state?
Neither is a reach though.
Virginia Tech is another idea. It is similar to Clemson, or to UNH but with a good football program.
@wisteria100 , I think he has pretty much ruled out LACs. He thinks they are too small. Unfortunately, his sis’s school has ruined that for him!
Thanks for all these new ideas everyone. We will start checking things out.
@MYOS1634 , in terms of fields of study, of all the schools mentioned so far, which do you think offer the best options for his potential majors?
Wake Forest and Miami of Ohio came to mind, along with the strong Ohio State Fisher School of Business, but if you are looking more reach-y you might want to consider Case Western or University of Rochester? Both strong schools and possible smaller class sizes.
