Where do the casual, non-hipster, jock/outdoorsy kids go to college?

OMG!!! My son got a 34 on his ACT!!! I can’t believe it!!!

WOW @Lindagaf Congrats to him (and you)!

Stanford, here we come! Haha!

He had a pretty good tutor, if I do say so myself.

Montana State does sound like a good fit. Skiing is right there as well as varied summer outdoors opportunities if he’s there in summer.

I couldn’t get hard stats but I know they lure OOSers with $$$. See article below. Most $$ is awarded without separate application, but if kid misses out on first round, there is an application process for 2nd round awards.

Montana universities are well respected and produce lots of good graduates. It is very common for highly qualified Montana HS grads to stay in state, and MSU is taking the lead after all the troubles UM has had. The article mentions that half of the entering class is now OOS. Montana Us have always attracted excellent OOS students who are drawn to wilderness, outdoor recreation, the Rockies, etc.

@Lindagaf I say you should raise your rates!!

So what do you all think? When the time comes, should he submit both SAT and ACT, or just ACT? Scores were 690 verbal /790 math SAT and 33 E/31 M/34 R/36 S ACT. I realize the 34 ACT composite is better than the 1480 SAT composite.

Congrats!!!Can you come tutor my daughter? I would send the ACT score, although the SAT is great, but that ACT score…wow

I don’t know for sure but my gut tells me if he is applying for any kind of STEM or business major I might send both to emphasize his strength in math (assuming he doesn’t take the SAT II in math).

Yes, I am kind of thinking you might be right @happy1 . He will not be doing the SAT2 and I will not ask him to. He is 100% donwe with tests. He is definitely interested in business. @MYOS1634 or @intparent , any thoughts re post #145?

I would definitely submit the ACT and NOT submit the SAT (for Stanford you must submit all testing, but for most schools you can submit either).

You are correct that an ACT of 34 is more than respectable for top schools. No sense in sullying that score with a lower score on the SAT unless as @happy1 suggests, you need to show a strong math score. If he’s taken AP Calc AB or BC and/or the SAT Math II Subject test, he should be fine.

Haha, @LoveTheBard , good point!

Yes, I agree. Submit the 34, not the SAT.

I might submit both. The 34 is equivalent to a 1540 so better but not by a huge amount. That 790 math is very strong. I don’t think a 1490 hurts you and that math score may help.

There’s a new ACT/SAT conversion chart coming out this summer so you can wait to see that. The talk is that the conversions are off and you may be surprised to see what his SAT score may convert to in a new table.

Intereting, @homerdog . Any chance you can link an article?

@Lindagaf so a 1500 is 99th percentile on the SAT but it concords to a 33 which is a 98th percentile on the ACT. Many are saying that that the 35 should be moved down to 1540 or 1530 and that trend should continue down through the scores. Even a 1590 should probably be a 36 since a 35.5 composite is rounded to a 36.

I will find the link on college board that says new concordance tables are coming and post it asap.

UNH if it hasn’t been mentioned. Any of the Big Sky conference schools would fit that bill for the most part.

“No sense in sullying that score with a lower score on the SAT”

I love how on CC a 1480 is sullying.

So, does his test scores change your strategy at all? What are his grades again?
