Where do the "cool" kids go to college?

NO WAY!!! She just got an email form Oberlin and they have offered her a place, AND they offered her money! Is that usual?

And she did nothing, no email, no grade update, nada, except say she would accept the wailist.

Ha! The plot thickens!

So itā€™s now Kenyon vs Oberlin? Wow.

(FWIW Oberlin also accepted my D off the waitlist, around this same time last year, but she was already mad at them for WLā€™ing her and already committed to her current school).

Wow!! Two posts back to back - what a different senario!! What is she going to do???

@OHMomof2 that is hilarious, my D just said pretty much the same thing. And she said ā€œif Iā€™m going to Ohio, Iā€™m going to Kenyon.ā€

I am suddenly in a turmoil. I am irrationally annoyed at Oberlin for offering merit. I am annoyed with them too because now my D is going to wonder if she will get off the WL at Carleton. Of course, it is Dā€™s fault for accepting WL in the first place.

Maybe I will get a chance to update my sagaā€¦ā€œFaithful Reader, when first I wrote post #263, I knew not that an addendum would be forthcomingā€¦ā€

lindagaf, I have a son finishing freshman year at oberlin, Iā€™m sure he (and a bunch of his friends) would happily answer any questions she might have. To date heā€™s had a great experience but he does find the whole PC thing ridiculous.

the unexpected, underestimated benefit of oberlin has been the exposure to the conservatory. Oberlin mixes the conservatory kids with the arts and sciences kids in the dorms so itā€™s natural for my son to attend conservatory concerts to see his friends play. This has exposed him to all manner of music and heā€™s decided to learn piano while at college.

we also underestimated the benefit of the ex-cos (one credit classes taught by kids). My son has learned american sign language and swing dancing. itā€™s somewhat more formal than an ec.

Wow - maybe Oberlin has been monitoring CC and wanted to add to the drama!

Wow congratulations I think?

This day just gets weirderā€¦the US Army just called for my D. I was very polite, just in case. Donā€™t want to get on the bad side of the Army. How on earth did the Army get our home phone number? Spookyā€¦
@wisteria100 , I think the government is monitoring CC!

Arenā€™t high schools allowed/required to provide the Army with graduating seniors data?
Since your daughter had decided she wasnā€™t interested in Oberlin anymore, I suppose itā€™s flattering but itā€™d make sense if she stuck with Kenyon. Carleton is another kettle of fish :).

Is that right, @MYOS1634 ? Thanks for explaining! Yes, Carleton is another kettle of fish. A great kettle of fish, but Kenyon has really grown on me.

Well, Iā€™m not certain. I know it was a big scandal some years ago, and some parents protested it, but I donā€™t know whether it was struck down or not, or if it applied/applied only to some states.

Let us know hot things turn out. The good news is that nothing bad can happen at this point. It is all good.

In our school district, part of the beginning-of-the-year paperwork that we fill out includes a permission slip for whom we authorize the school district to share information such as name, phone number, and address. This includes entities like the PTA, Health Department, Military, and elected officials. I do not authorize any information sharing except maybe name and address with the PTA; no military, no health department or anyone else because my kids are minors in HS and I donā€™t want them to be targeted for contact by any of these entities.

Anybody want a good deal on a 3-bedroom colonial in suburban Detroit? Iā€™m selling it all, moving to Gambier , Ohio, and opening a piercing kiosk near the Kenyon campus.

I canā€™t believe Iā€™m obsessed with this. I donā€™t even know you. So what did she pick? Kenyon or Oberlin?

@ZZdecision2016 , my D is very amused by your post. I am sorry/pleased to say that she will not be disuaded from Kenyon. I tried. I know there is no way I could resist the idea of a college dating service and $5 work of art rental for my dorm room, but itā€™s not me going to college.

Itā€™s a bit of a bugger though, because now we keep wondering if she will get off another waitlist. Waitlist limbo is super annoying and super boring too. There are too many questions, like how long after May 1 do colleges wait before notifying WL students? My instinct is that if it didnā€™t happen this week, it wonā€™t happen, so I think we will both move on now.

Or, she will move on. I have a son in 9th gradeā€¦Iā€™ll be back. (bonus points to anyone who can name the movie.)

The Terminator:)
I think Kenyon is a great choice, probably the safer choice if she isnā€™t an absolute, total liberal in every sense.

Kenyon sounds like a great choiceā€¦ One of my kids only applied to 3 schools-accepted at one and waitlisted at the other two. He got off the first waitlist the first week of May , paid the deposit on that school, and then got off the 2nd waitlist the first week of June and then switched to that school (which he had originally applied ED to). So, we lost 2 deposits. He really had moved on after getting off the first waitlist school and was getting excited about going to that school when the second waitlist offer came. He was actually initially somewhat annoyed that he got off that second waitlist because he had to think yet again about what to do. So, yes, waitlist limbo is indeed annoying ! Each school is different (and each year and itsā€™ application cycle will be different) in terms of when they close the waitlist. If your daughter clearly likes Kenyon, she could ask the other schools to remove her from their waitlists so that she can truly move on . The only reason my son stayed on the second waitlist is that it had been his clear first choice. Good luck.

Thanks @sevmom , that is useful info. And @citymama9 , yes, itā€™s Arnie:-) Redeem your points for another story in about 18 months.
