Hello, I’m from Turkey and I’m an 11th grader. I’m preparing for the SAT exam.I have some questions to ask.
First of all, do the colleges expect too much scores from the international students like me? (I’m not asking for any college, I refer to well known colleges.)
I’m not the only student getting ready for SAT we are a group of 8. Every week we have SAT exams of KAPLAN. My first score was 1440 second was 1720 3red was 1760 4th was 1830 . I thought that I would always be climbing up but today we had an exam which I got 1710 total. I’m totally disappointed and I need advice on how to improve my score. I will be taking the exam both on may1st and the one in june. What should I do?
Lastly; my lowest score is always from the critical reading section. What can I do to make it better other than memorizing vocabulary?

I’m from Malaysia but live in England.

Oh ok… it sems like no one is interested in giving advice but thanks anyway…

Definition of “well known” is relative but a score in 1800-1900 is not bad. Yale will probably not accept many students with that score but UT Austin most likely will. In any case, US universities have a holistic approach to admissions and they consider a wide range of factors while evaluating their applicants. SAT score is not the most important criteria although it is not very insignificant either. A strong academic record and excellence in extracurricular activities can make up for a lower SAT score. Moreover, my understanding is that many international students, for obvious reasons, do not fare as well in CR and Writing sections as US students and that universities are not oblivious to this fact. Having said that, you should still give these sections your best shot. Also try to compensate for a lower score in CR through a higher one in Mathematics. And do especially well in SAT subject tests if you intend taking them as well.

I am afraid it might not be possible to drastically improve your CR score in a very short span of time but you can still try. Practice as many comprehension passages as you can get hold of, make sure you manage your time well and do not just memorize new words but use them in sentences of your own as well. Also make a habit of reading English books, magazines and newspapers. Check out, for example, the Economist magazine website in your spare time or pick a piece of fiction. Orhan Pamuk is an excellent Turkish author for instance; read the English translations of his books if you have not already!
