What are you looking for, and what can your family afford? There are many small colleges that you can get into easily, especially if you do not need financial aid. You can get into most SUNYs. Do you want urban, suburban, or rural? Would you prefer a large or small college?

If you’re majoring in CS or engineering, they say it really doesn’t matter where you go to school that much. I’m in Arkansas and was reading in a business paper here that 800 computer programmers are needed at WalMart right now, but they are having tremendous trouble filling the positions. I looked on Glass Door for the salaries, and several reports said $75K starting. Don’t NY kids get some kind of subsidy from the state to go in-state? I went to U of Rochester, and (though I was not from NY) seem to recall that. My father in law is a professor at SUNY Geneseo and feels it is a very good school. (He went to Harvard.)

fatdog11 is correct that you should apply to at least a few schools in the SUNY system that offer engineering. This is a given.

The financial piece:You need to sit down with your parents and figure out what they plan to pay for college. Each college has a Net Price Calculator somewhere on its website. (Sometimes you’ll have to do a search for it.) Fill out the NPC for a few schools with your mom or dad, as you’ll need some information from them to complete it. This will give you an idea of what you can afford.

Beyond that, it would help to know if you’d like to go to a bigger campus or smaller one. I notice that you want to be near New York or California. The reality is that your 3.2 GPA is not the best to be competing with other kids for schools in highly popular New York and the Northeast. The more open you can be on geography, the more likely you will find a good fit for you. Could you open it up to the whole East Coast (down to Florida) and California up to Seattle?

If you are an OOS student, the California UC’s/Cal states give little to no financial aid, so expect to pay around $35K/year for a Cal State, $55K/year for a UC. Your GPA will hurt your chances at all but a few UC’s such as UCR/UCM/UCSC. Privates such as Univerisity of Redlands, Whittier College, Cal Lutheran, University of Pacific could be less expensive depending upon how much FA is required and how much FA they will offer. Your Stats will not get you any merit aid.
You need to expand your list beyond NY or CA as suggested by @Picapole. Good Luck.

you should consider some schools in new jersey. i know new jersey has a bad rep sometimes but the education’s pretty good and there are some nice places in the state. i live right by Monmouth University and it’s a nice school. I have my swim practices in their rec center and it’s an awesome facility. it’s about 10 minutes from the beach but they have some dorms on the beach. Other schools in NJ to consider are Rider University(private), Seton Hall(private), and Rutgers(great school, but not sure what aid you’d get as an OOS). It’s also really easy to get into NYC from north jersey colleges and into Philly from south jersey colleges via trains and buses

3.2 is my unweighted GPA
My Weighted is 3.6
