i live in virginia and i really need to go to west coast...
but my problem is the money..my parents and i cant afford to go to expansive colleges.

my gpa is 3.8 and sat is 1820..
sat2math 700..

what schools in cali do u think i should apply?
i wanna study chemistry or chemE.

You could look at California State Universities (~$20,000/year OOS). You could also check University of Oregon and Oregon State…a little more expensive, still pretty strong schools.

The UC system just raised their tuition if I recall correctly by 25%. When I last saw the cost of attending including estimated expenses was around $49k to $50k for UCLA. So I would cross off pretty much every UC system from Irvine, UCLA, Berkeley, etc.

I’m not really good with the Cali schools but I think your stats are too low for Stanford and a low reach for USC.

okay. so i came down to CSU Long beach or Fullerton…
but, i hear ppl saying that CSUs are not as good as UCs are…
also, im interested in Occidental and pitzer college…
are those two would be too reach and expansive for me?

CSUs are not as good as UC schools (generally). But the UCs are out of your price range for OOS, and the top tier ones are out of your academic range.

Occidental is $48,000 a year and Pitzer is $50,000 a year, and your stats look like they’re on the low end for both.

If you need a LOT of financial help, and you’ll qualify for FA, then don’t apply to CA state schools (UCs or Cal States) because they can’t help with what you’ll need.

Do you know what your family’s EFC is?

How much can your parents contribute to your education each year?

Why do you “need” to go to schools in Calif?

BTW…the cost of attendance at a Cal State for an OOS student is about $31k per year, since they have to pay an additional $11,000 more than the in-state student.

What in-state schools are you applying to? You need some financial safety schools. :)

im applying to uva, va tech and vcu…
and my family income is about 30,000. im not sure what the EFC is…
also,im applying to washington seattle which is another college thats in the west…

Others can chime in here to indicate if your family income is low enough for Pell. How many people are in your family (I’m not sure if that makes a difference, but it may.)

However, state schools on west coast aren’t going to give you aid, except for the small amounts that the feds will give you. So, you’ll have a huge gap between aid and cost.

Your OOS college costs are going to cost $30k-45k plus, so getting a few small grants from the feds isn’t going to cover your costs. Does that make sense to you.

Your own state schools and some privates will give you the most money.

You might try applying to some privates in Calif that are known to strongly meet need.

yes.so i took out all the UCs and CSUs out of my list.
and i have some virginia colleges, cali privates, UW (i know its public but i just love this school and location…^^)
