Of the 1.5 million entrants, some 50,000 with the highest PSAT/NMSQT® Selection Index scores (critical reading + mathematics + writing skills scores) qualify for recognition in the National Merit® Scholarship Program. In April following the fall test administration, high-scoring participants from every state are invited to name two colleges or universities to which they would like to be referred by NMSC. In September, these high scorers are notified through their schools that they have qualified as either a Commended Student or Semifinalist.

So what schools should I send my scores to? I do not make great grades and have average EC's so it would not behoove me to send it to any Ivy's.

do some research into which schools you might like to attend and that are in your scores range. Then send it to them.

Not every college and university participates in the National Merit Program. To see the list of institutions that DO participate, see the National Merit Foundation report: http://www.nationalmerit.org/annual_report.pdf

CalAlum, the OP is not a National Merit Finalist so it would not matter which schools participate in giving scholarships to finalists

I would send the scores to the top 2 schools of your dreams

Pierre, are you saying I should send it to reach schools rather than safeties?

well not necessarily reach schools but the 2 schools where you would most like to go for college

Take scholarships and finances into consideration as well. I sent my scores to Claremont McKenna and USC because those are two schools I am aiming to get big scholarships at. (however unlikely).
