Where should I start applying to? I'm lost...

Hello college confidential users, I am a current junior in high school. I hope to major in engineering and am curious at which schools I should apply to. I would really like to go to a college that has great stem programs and has good sports teams. Thanks.
Stats:
Current GPA: 3.94 W 3.86 UW
Projected GPA after junior year: 4.14W 3.90UW
ACT: 24 SAT: 1200+ projected
7 honors 5 AP (After junior year)
ECs:

  • Deca (Member for 2 years, went on a field trip and did math testing for ICDC)
  • FBLA (Member for 1 year)
  • Choir (Select men’s ensemble group, competition at six flags, concerts)
  • Drama (School play)
  • Cookie fundraiser (Raised $400

What is your home state?

What is your budget?

How are your grades in math and science classes?

Your unweighted GPA is quite good. I will assume that you are doing SAT preparation – it can help quite a bit.

Georgia
Unlimited (Although scholarships would help my family a lot)
93 in Accelerated Pre-Calculus and 90 in AP Chem
I don’t really ever have time for SAT prep besides the weekends or breaks. I’ll look into it though.

@DadTwoGirls

I just want to know what schools would be a good fit for me categorized as reach, target, and safety.

Also, I will have an internship and will take 7 aps next year if that helps my application.

What is your math ACT score? U of Georgia might be a place to look. Your scores look too low for GaTech.
Thats good that you have a high grade, 93, in your 11th grade pre calculus class. Will you sign up for Calculus next year?

Math is very important for engineering, and an exposure to calculus will help. If your math scores are higher than reading, that is good too, but 24 average is pretty low to get into any engineering program in Georgia, so you may need to look at U of Alabama, schools in South Carolina or Florida.

U of Central Florida has strong engineering, and its in east Orlando, a fun city. Its much easier to get into compared to GaTech, your premier engineering public school, which would be a great price for you, but out of reach due to
your ACT test scores.

(U of Florida Gainesville is another top engineering college, but you would need much higher SAT or ACT scores for that school as well. )

Look up all the state engineering programs near you, and look at the average math scores of students at those schools… If yours is low
you must study and take the ACT or SAT again. You would benefit from a test prep class. It will help you for college to learn test taking strategies as well.

@Coloradomama I will take AB/BC next year. I scored a 26 on the math for the ACT. My problem was that I ran out of time greatly diminishing my scores. Do you know where I can sign up for an sat test prep class? I will have time over the summer so that would be a good time to take it.

Your priority needs to be studying for your standardized tests. Engineering programs tend to be more competitive than other majors. I agree with the above advice to look up the common data set for some of your state schools to see what you really need to be aiming for.

Mindfish is very good, but look in Georgia too. Search SAT/ACT prep and the word “Georgia” or the city you live near.

MIndfish does have on line type classes.

@Coloradomama Thanks. I will check it out.
