I currently reside in California. I am wishing to attend an in-state college. I have been listening to discussions between close friends of mine and they have been talking about transferring. This has got me worried. I am unsure about which colleges would be my best bet. I would greatly appreciate assistance from those, like you all, that know more about the acceptance process.

I am in my second year of community college. My current GPA is a 2.8. My major is English. I am going to go to law school after I finish 4 years of college. I worked full time at my job during the first year of college. This greatly diminished my grades. Now that I quit my job and am receiving state funds I am focusing just on college. My GPA should be a 3.3 by the end of this semester being that I am taking 19 units, 3 of which are honors, and I am not working. By the time I transfer it should be a 3.4 or maybe higher.

I am currently in the honors enrichment program at my college. I am an ASB senator for my college. I have taken on a lot of responsibility, which has been recognized by all those in ASB and the college administrators, with organizing a lot of the marketing and advertizement handling and fixing up the schools ASB website which has been laking in attention for several years. I have volunteered at many events: Walk for Peace, etc. I have countless amounts of professor/administrator recommendations: the dean of admission, the old dean of admission, and another from a great professor of mine. I am a member of the amnesty international club, VP for the Political Science club I helped establish.

Which colleges would you say I have the best chances with? I am even willing to attend an out of state college, like Georgetown, if I have the possibility of being accepted. From what I see, UCI and UCR seem like very good possibilities. What do you guys think?

Check out something like University of Colorado at Boulder or Penn State University Park, both are good schools with pretty high acceptance rates. If you can actually get your gpa to a 3.3 you have a chance at UC's besides UCLA and UCBerkeley.

If I were to apply to UCLA or Berkeley, more so UCLA, what would I need to change to have a better shot? If I can somehow manage to get all A's for the next 2 semesters, I could get a 3.5 transferable GPA. How much would my chances change at UCLA or Berkeley? Would Berkeley even be a viable option?

if you could get to a 3.5 you would have a chance at UCLA, you would probably even have a chance with a 3.3. That is as long as you aren't apply as a business major. I don't know too much about Berkeley but with a 3.5 you have a chance but are nowhere near guranteed. When I say a chance I mean a possibility, it is worth applying to but nothing to bank on. With a 3.3 you should check out UCSD which is a very good university with great academics. What are you looking for in a campus and what kind of school?

Yury: On there website it says you need a minimum 3.0 UC-transferable GPA to get into Berkeley. I highly doubt they take any 3.0 students.

burgler09: My major is English. I know they like accepting English majors. I am not sure UCSD even has a English department. I am looking for a college in California that has merit to its name.

UCLA has a minimum requirement of 3.2 to apply, even. Plus, English is an impacted major which means that they are looking for well above the minimum.Good luck with your search.

The last grades that they will be able to calculated into your GPA will be Fall 2007 Grades and if possible Winter 2008 Grades. They won't be able to input your 4th semester grades b/c it will be in June and they offer admission during March/April and even though you appeal, your 4th semester grades will still not be available b/c appeal process is during May and 4th semester grades will be out in June

p.s. tho they may offer you admission, they require confirmation that the grades you submitted online are real so they ask for transcripts that include spring grades. so no admitted student can slack off until that semester is over either! :P

UCSD has a lot of merit behind its name and is known as a very good school, granted i don't know anything about english majors but UCSD is a well known school.
