we are now planing a trip to UofC with our daughter who is going to attend the Pre-Orientation Program for Interbational Students which scheduled to start on 12 Sept 2007. We intend to stay in the school for 2 weeks.

Please anyone here can advise what is a relatively cheape and convenient option for our stay during our visit to the school from 11 Sept to 22 Sept.

I noticed two options from the information the school has provided: International House and University Quarters.

but we are not sure if we are qualified for booking a guest room in I-House. As for the UQ, the rate, according to its webpage, is not really cheaper than that of an ordinary hotel. Is it wirthy of staying here than a hotel, how close and easy to access the campus from UQ ?

any advice and information is appreciated.

When we visited, we stayed at the Ramada Lakeshore. It's fairly close (half and hour walk, or a $5 cab ride) and pretty cheap ($85 a night if you mention your there because of the University) but, its facilities are kinda crappy. Also look into the Quadrangle Club, no clue how expensive it is but, its right on campus and looked pretty cool.

thanks Davnasca!

my only information source is from the link above. I was told we could approach admission office to get a better rate for the hotels.

On th website , the ratea all seems to be higher than thd one you paid.
I was hopping we can get a better rate given our longer time of stay :(

I will check the places you recommended . thank you .

I have no clue on the rate for the quadrangle club is, and the good rate for the Ramada isn't posted. My parents are taking a very laizziez-faire approach to the college process. Basically, they said what ever I plan, they will try to make it happen. So, I called the Ramada Lakeshore, and booked a room, and then on a whim, asked whether they had a deal for visiting the University, and, they did! So just call and mention University of Chicago and the room will be $85 a night (I think).

Wherever you look in the Chicao area, make sure to ask for a U of C rate. many of the hotels have them, and the Orientation people will have a list of hotels for orientation sometime over the summer. I fyou call the programming office they may be able to give you that information now. The Stony Island Suites (I think thats the name) are also a place mentioned, specifically for lonter term stays.

I house is actually not bad since it has been renovated, and the rates are good, but it is rather dorm like and I believe it lacks AC, which could be a problem in sepember.

The Ramada has cheap rates for a reason. The University does not recommend it, and you will not find it listed on many U. websites.

For Quad club rooms, you need to book through a member, and when I last stayed there 18 months ago, the rooms were rather retro. Others would say tired.

Most visitors end up staying downtown or out by Midway Airport. Midway area is cheaper but a pain to drive to the campus, unless you enjoy "interesting" neighborhoods.

It is sad that no good hotels exist on the south side near the U.

thanks to the advice so far.
University Quarters quoted me is rate 990 for a week (including daily Breskfirst ) for a room ( 2 persons I guess) , I was told it is quite close to the campus, but it is not a hotel.

I-House is my preferred option, but not sure if parents like us are allowed to book room there or not. I have sent them an enquiry , not yet received a reply.

I am not sure if we can drive in USA or not. :) so transportation is one of our consideration .

The metra rail is your best friend if you stay downtown. Its a 20 minute, $3, nice, train ride from the heart of downtown to the campus. So, if staying downtown is your thing, transportation to campus isn't a huge issue.

We looked into the University Quarters. Its probably nicer than a hotel, to be honest. Most bed and breakfasts are very comfy and clean, but you don't get "hotel amenities" like pools ect. But we needed a place that could sleep 4 in 1 room, so the Ramada Lakeshore it was. And yeah, it was crappy, but if your just gonna sleep there, I don't see it as a major problem.

Yes, we just need a place to sleep in the night, so not really concerned with
amentites. Given the long distance from Singapore to Chicago, we will probably do someshopping in the downtown unless we can find the shops in the campus :)

I have stayed at the I House several times and have never been asked for any proof of university affiliation. I just called, booked the room and paid with a credit card. No problem.

thank you . yes, we have just received an email reply from I-house advising we can stay there and the rate for a week is quite reasonable . :) cheers
