Hi everyone! Okay so my question is, what are some great colleges to look at when applying for someone who took many AP, Pre-Ap, Honors classes and did decent in them, got a 1920 on the first try (I'm taking it again), and is really determined to work hard and succeed? Elementary through Middle School, I was that straight A student that was always top in class. Sophomore year in high school was going great until my best friend passed away which shattered me and left me grieving for a few weeks. Due to this, my grades went from A's to B's and even a C in one class. Junior year, I jumped back on the flow of things and got all A's. Senior year is coming this fall and I'm gonna put in even more effort than I did before. My GPA and rank is horrible. Unfortunately, I feel like what happened to me Sophomore year is not an excuse and colleges will only be able to see the grades, essays, and recommendation letters. I am involved in many clubs, honor societies, and I'm also VP of National English Honor Society at my school. Another concern I have is my race. I am an Indo-Pak American, I was born here but I still am Asian at the end of the day. I know there is a lot of debate going on with "Does classifying yourself as Asian on a college app compare you with other Asian applicants?" so I wanted to know if it really does effect your app. I know I went through a lot of things so I really appreciate you guys for taking time out and reading this. I'd love it if you could help me. Thanks!

You have to give more info to get suggestions. What is current gpa and rank? What is your home state? What can your parents pay per year, or are you qualified for financial aid? Do you have any major or career goals in mind yet? Do you have preference for large or small school? If you tell a few schools you know and like, people can give you ideas of similar schools elsewhere.

My GPA is 3.5 and I am top 17%. I live in Texas and money shouldn’t be an issue as my parents have saved up for my college fund and loans won’t be a hassle if I do end up getting one. I want to major in the Business field and the size of a school is not an issue either. I like UT Austin a lot but the problem with that is in Texas if you’re top 10%, you are automatically admitted to any school in Texas. Because UT is quite good, they only accept 7% for grads of 2014. The rest are judged on family circumstances, talents, abilities and race (which is why there is a court case that has gone to the supreme court recently, Fisher vs. UT. It’s funny though cause the girl who filed a suit against UT went to my high school.) But my main concern is trying to get into a great school. Thanks!

OU is a very popular safety school for Texans who wanted to go to UT Austin. It’s not terribly expensive, and has pretty good programs in a number of fields. You’d get in there, but probably wouldn’t get merit aid.

Its ridiculously hard to get into McCombs(one of the best business schools in the US) if you are not in the top 8%. You definitely need to get the SAT score up to 2100+. Your GPA is also on the low side. I don’t know what you should do. Just apply to low cost OOS schools like University of Alabama, North Carolina State University, Iowa State University, University at Buffalo, University of Minnesota etc.

You might get into Texas A&M.
