Where to find scholarships?

Hello, I plan to go to a UC school and am currently looking for scholarships… but most of them that I found have a requirement ( students have to be a engineering major, math… etc) but as a music major, I can’t seem to find any scholarships?? I use fastweb, scholarshipsprogram, etc. I am willing to write essays to apply but where do you guys find those scholarships? I don’t want to have loans D;

Did you try the specific school? That’s generally your best bet.

How much are you hoping to find each year for 4 years?

Are you a California resident?

What year are you in school now?

What is your resident state?

Yes I am a California resident and I am a senior in high school. I hope to find around $8,000 for my freshman year. UCB sent me emails about leadership scholarships/middle class scholarships and I’ve already applied but I don’t know where else to search for scholarships…

I have heard that it is best to find $500 - $1,000 at a time from local affiliate clubs (rotary/lions/democratic or republican women’s clubs) that require essays or speeches delivered to the club in sparsely-attended competitions for $500. Repeat 8 - 16 times (per year?).

I could not motivate my oldest to do it, so I have no recent experience. I did it myself back before the Dodo bird was extinct.

Here is a great note on an approach:

Also, realize that you can earn around $2,500 - $3,500 per year during school on campus with on-campus jobs. Preference is given to work-study students, but they are available to all students. You could also work summers and over that LOOONG winter break (if you go to UCB)- holiday season retail may be a possibility, or possibly gigs at holiday parties, or both? AND remind your parents that their utility, grocery, and “random $20” expenses will be going down, so they could be a bit generous?

Good Luck!

You only need the $8000 for one year? What about the other years? Do you have a summer job? Did you check with your guidance counselor?

@ItsJustSchool‌ Thank you!
@Madison85‌ yes I can pay for the rest for my freshman year but other years, I would have to look for scholarships again. And I do have a summer job (: My counselor doesn’t know anything apparently… she only told me about fafsa (which I filled out already)

If you are going to need $8000 per year (which could increase as costs go up), that school sounds unaffordable. Many scholarships are small ($500-$1000), they are often just for one year (your first year), and competition is plentiful.

Do you have a financial safety school?

not really… I only applied to UC schools :confused:

Most financial aid awards at UC start out (after EFC) with $5,500 Loans and $2,500 - $3,500 (UCB is on the high end) Work-Study, so $8,000. That sounds about right. After that, they fill in with grants and “UC scholarships.” Regents’ or departmental could reduce loans & Work Study, but are VERY competitive.
