At Clark, it's gonna cost me something like 7-8k.

At McGill, it's gonna cost me 22k, 25k, 25k, 25k in the four years.

Q1. Where should I go? FYI, my EFC at most US colleges was 12k.

Q2. Is taking a loan on the house advisable? We'll get the loan for sure though.

Q3. Would this choice really matter if I get into a top notch graduate school?

PS more decisions are about to come, but I have 2 already and I want to make a rough decision now so that the future rejections do not destroy plans.

Are you saying that it will cost you 7k per year at Clark??? or 7k total for all 4 years?

You say that you have “full tuition” at Clark…if you can’t commute to the school, then won’t you have room, board and books to pay for?

It isn’t worth borrowing 100k to go to McGill.

Go to the college that will cost you the least so that you might have money for grad school. Clark is a very good school with a very good reputation. You could do a LOT worse. Congratulations!

Undergrad really does not matter in most cases if you plan to go to grad school. Certainly not enough to go into debt over $25k over 4 years.

I assume you meant $100K over 4 years as I think $25K total over 4 years is a worthwhile expense to getting a degree.

I have to agree with the other posters - Clark is an excellent school and if you truly only have to pay max $32,000 ($8K x 4) for it, that’s a great deal.

Go for Clark if they offer the major you want and are strong in it. If you aren’t happy you can always transfer, and McGill will cost you the same either way. If you aren’t happy at McGill and want to transfer to Clark, you might not get as good a financial aid deal after your freshman year (especially if the Clark deal includes any merit aid).

I got a renewable 5k scholarship at McGill, and I can get a Canadian residency pretty soon, right? Doesn’t that mean higher starting pay for me, if I get a job in Canada after graduation? But class sizes are so bloody huge in McGill…

I’m still unsure…

I went to Clark and my husband went to McGill…both of us vote in favor of Clark. You will receive more attention from faculty, likely receive higher grades (which might matter for grad school), and an have easier time getting the classes you want and getting involved on campus. And you can consider the 5th year MA program.

My D applied to McGill as a financial safety (and only got a one time 3K entrance scholly). She also applied to 4 LACS…if one of these accepts her with the same or lower price tag, McGill will be dropped.

For families with high EFCs, McGill offers a nice alternative to pricey out-of-state Us (but not good LACs at discounted rates).
