where to go?!

i'm a junior in high school and i'm finally on summer break!! :D
so now, i'm trying to make my college list but i have NO IDEA where to go... :/
i definitely want a college with a music major (music production, recording, studio music, etc.) but i also want to be able to do psychology and other things like graphic designing and photography. but what i'm really looking for in a college is music and psychology...
any suggestions?

What kind of school are you interested in? Big? Small? Urban? Suburban? Rural?
What kind of student are you? This is important in your college search - you need to look at colleges that are realistic.

There are probably hundreds of schools that meet your criteria, but we’d need more information.

weighted gpa: 4.3
unweighted gpa: about 3.7 (somewhere around there)
rank: 3 out of about 400
SAT: 1950
SAT II Math 2: 720
SAT II US History: 650
SAT II Biology: 650
5 APs and the rest are mostly honors

i want a school that is preferably small and suburban or urban…
-has finanacial aid and scholarships; my family won’t be able to pay for college most likely so i REALLY need this
-somewhat of a party school, not too partying but not too academic; somewhere in the middle

so this is what i’m looking for mostly!
thanks :D

some of my EC:
-been in my church orchestra since 2006 (clarinet)
-church praise band since 2008 (electric guitar)
-Welby Way Elementary Math Tutor since 2009
-just started volunteering at the West Valley Animal Shelter
-secretary of National Honors Society (joined in 2009)
-CSF

What state do you reside in?

i live in california, but the state the school is in doesn’t really matter to me.

cali has some of the best colleges, so you can probably pay in state tuition and still get an awesome education.
remember, out of state colleges are twice the price.
to get some names of colleges that match your interests, i suggest making an account on college board (if you haven’t already), and narrowing down your search there.

also, look at the programs of colleges that you know of in cali.

hope that helps!

(ps i wish i could go to college in california :b)

University of Rochester and Oberlin College both have really good music programs! They’re also both smaller, suburban-y schools. :)

hahaha california is great! i have found some schools (including oberlin and rochester :D) but i still have so many that i really am not sure. some of the other schools i’ve found through the college search on this website are drexel, university of hartford, and usc seems really nice (although i like ucla better. haahah). there’s also stanford here which is pretty good for psych. so i’m still looking, just need help finding which schools will actually have music, psych, graphic design, and photography. so… if you know any schools please share!!! hahahh.

@jessnic
yes i have thought about those schools but i was just wondering… do both of those schools have music production, recording, studio music, etc??? cause i thought that these schools had more emphasis on playing like orchestral music…???

are there any specific colleges with A LOT of CONNECTIONS?

You should research:

University of Colorado Boulder,University of Texas Austin, Rutgers, and University of California Davis

As far as I’ve seen, URochester does look like it has more of an emphasis on orchestral music, but I know UR is very flexible and it’s very likely they will let you “create” your own major. They have no gen. ed. requirements and let you take any courses you want! On a video I watched, a student said he made up his major of “Medieval Studies” and had eight teachers all to himself, haha.

Oberlin has the following types of undergrad. degrees, copied from their website exactly: "Performance (piano, organ, voice, strings, woodwinds, brass, percussion, early instruments); Composition; Technology in Music and Related Arts; Jazz Studies; Music History; Music Theory (as part of a double major only); Double Major in Piano Performance and Vocal Accompanying; Individual Major. "

So it looks like Oberlin might be a little better for you in terms of majors offered.

:)

Oh! and SeattleBulldog is right, UT Austin and UC Davis might be great fits too!

Ok…

What do you mean by saying that your family won’t be able to pay much. Do you mean that your family is lowish income…or do you mean that your family makes good money, but can’t afford to pay much?

That makes a huge difference…If your family is low income, then you will qualify for some aid (maybe not enough, but some aid.)

However, if your family has a good income (say $85k per year or more) and they can’t contribute anything, that means that you would have to apply to a totally different type of school.

Most schools do NOT meet need.

Are you going to test again? If so, will you take the ACT as well?

What is your Math + CR score?

*just need help finding which schools will actually have music, psych, graphic design, and photography. so… if you know any schools please share!!! hahahh.

yes i have thought about those schools but i was just wondering… do both of those schools have music production, recording, studio music, etc??? *

So, that will be your major interest?

@jessnic
hahaah. i see i see. thanks so much!
yeah, i was pretty interested in oberlin cause my history teacher always talked about that school. LOL.
UR sounds very interesting, the “no gen ed” part is very appealing!!

@mom2collegekids
oh…i mean that my family has really low income, so i need the financial aid badly!
yes i will def be taking the SAT or ACT again. i took the ACT but i don’t know my score yet… but i’m pretty sure it wasn’t that great.
for SAT: math+CR = 1320 :[
but when i take the SAT again, i’m pretty sure my score will go up because this score came about with not too much studying. hahah.
and as for my major, i’m still iffy between psychology and music technology/production. these are the two i’m interested in. so if there’s a college that has majors for both of these subjects, that would be awesome!!!
