I know it's a bit early, since many of us haven't settled on Dartmouth yet, but if we do, where should we fill out our room and board applications for? I've read on these boards that EW might not be a good place to live unless you're an anti-party kind of person. What are the pros and cons of the different dorms, and which are best for incoming freshman?

With the exception of applying to live in the east wheelock cluster, or applying for substance free housing, freshmen do not get a choice in housing
:(

In the past, half of the freshmen lived in the choates and l the river dorms (as they were all freshman dorms) Himan, in the river cluster, will be closing this year so some of the freshmen will be shifted and ther will be freshmen accomodations in the new dorms (Mclaughlin) .

Where you end up living is pretty much going to be the luck of the draw.

Thank ksandstart for finding this link;

If in the survey I select smoke-free housing, how does that narrow down the housing I might end up in? Which houses are smoke-free?

Will my smoke-free preference even be considered or is it mainly just substance-free preferences that count?

All housing is now smoke free.

I lived in the Choates this year, and I'm a big fan. Recently renovated, right by frat row, and lots of chances to bond with other freshmen. (Also many singles, if you like privacy).

Actually you can try to request a specific dorm or room type, you may or may not get it, but there is a comment area on the room form that can be used for requests. Interestingly, DD was told at orientation that there were more single rooms than requests, so if you want a single, you have a pretty fair chance of getting one - Dartmouth kids are social sorts. She is also in the Choates.
It's a little hard to say what next year will be like with the new dorms opening.

Lots of freshmen will be assigned to the brand new dorms in two room doubles.
That sounds pretty nice.
