I'll be graduating from Univ. of Michigan in a few weeks and I'll be working at Columbia U for a year at the medical center thereafter. I am unfamiliar with the area and I was hoping you guys could help me out.

First of all, if I wanted to find a house with Columbia students (undergrad or grads), where would you guys recommend I look?

Also, how far is the medical center from the "central campus"?

The medical school is at 168th st. The main campus is 116th st. If you wanted to live around 116th, the commute isn’t that bad. I lived at 172nd this summer and commuted to 116th everyday. It took like 10 minutes. You can buy a weekly or monthly subway pass that allows unlimited travel. Its nice to have if you want to explore the city after work.

Housing services has a site setup for people who are interested in finding off campus housing (ie not Columbia owned). There are even listings from people who already have an apartment but are looking for roommates.

If you’re going to work at the medical center, why live in Morningside Heights? Do what broken_symlink did and live in Washington Heights (i.e. in the 160s and 170s).

Yea from the sounds of it I think morningside heights might be more practical if I can find a place there. Besides craigslist and Facebook Marketplace, do you guys know of any other sites I can look into?

Like broken said, Columbia has an Off-Campus Housing Authority office that will, for free, help any faculty, staff, or student find a place to live in New York. Google it.
