We're planning a trip to UMich in April, and need a place to stay near the north campus, just for one night. I looked on the website, and there are a million places listed.

Anyone have a recommendation for a clean, not too expensive, not too far from campus hotel/motel? We will have a car.

Best Western. I satyed there this summer when I visited the campus. It's not exactly close to campus but the bus system was extremely efficient (We didn't have a car). It's not too expensive and a recognised chain.

If you go to google maps, and search for "hotels near ann arbor", it'll list where all of the hotels in the area are. Holiday Inn off of Plymouth is the closest one to North Campus, and it's not that much further away from Central Campus than the hotels at State and I-94. Make sure you stop by and look at Central Campus, too. Even if you're going into a program that's based out of North Campus, lots of those people also end up taking some LSA classes on Central Campus, and also Central Campus is really the heart and the life of the university. So you'll probably want to spend at least part of a day looking around Central Campus/the adjoining area.

I'd imagine that since those places are directly on central campus/near downtown, that they would cost a decent amount more than one of the surrounding chains.

I guess it depends on what one sees as "a decent amount more". Sure, it will cost an extra $50-$100 more per day, but the convenience more than makes up for it.

We stayed at at the Marriott Residence Inn which is right off I-94; it is about a 10 minute drive to campus and you get a nice suite style room and they have complimentary breakfast.

Staying down near 94 isn't a bad option, because you are reasonably close to central campus (which is where the visitor center is, and where a campus tour would start) but can get to North Campus easily (either through town, or by whipping north on 23 and getting off on Plymouth Road). I think most of the hotels down near the interstate (nearly all of them being off Exit 177, State Street) are fine. My own family has recently stayed at the Holiday Inn Express (within the Briarwood Mall complex) and the Comfort Inn and were pleased with both.

I like the Hampton Inn (Hilton operated). Nice rooms and not too expensive. I stayed in the North one on Green road near North campus when I visited last time. My friend stayed in the one near Briarwood mall (South) and he liked it too.
