Where to transfer to

So I'm trying to decide on which school I should transfer to from my current community college. My parents would really like me to go one of the top tier schools(Cornell/Duke/Georgetown/Northwestern) but my gpa is only at a 3.4/3.5 so I'm finding that a little unlikely. Are there any really good schools, with good reputations(especially when it comes to political science as that is my major) that I should look into? And shall I go ahead and just apply to those four anyway?

Thanks in advance for any suggestions and help.

The state you live in may matter a lot here. Many states have guaranteed admission if you meet certain criteria.

U Rochester has a good reputation and is extremely strong in political science (#11 in NRC, #15 in USNWR).

Emory could be a reasonable reach, depending on the other factors (test scores, ecs, recs, essays, and the like).

American University and Ohio State

You might also want to consider some of the liberal arts colleges that focus on holistic admissions rather than being simply stats-driven. Those are often the test-optional colleges, meaning the ones that don’t require SAT/ACT scores.

It should be noted, however, that it can be extremely difficult to transfer into LACs (even less selective ones) because they typically have very few transfer slots available.

Bowdoin, a test-optional school, admitted 6 transfer applicants out of 196 last year…that’s a 3% admit rate.
