Online? Best Buy? Somewhere else?

not best buy!!!! AHH!!!

If you have the time follow some of the tech bargain sites. My favorite is techbargains(dot)com. I got my Dell laptop at about 50% off, but they feature great deals from many stores and manufacturers--peripherals too.

You can go to Best Buy and Circuit City. Then check out the manufacturers websites and compare prices to that in the store.

I looked at newegg(dot)com and I saw one that I thought was a decent one but I've never tried buying something this expensive online and I'm sure my mother would be a little hesitant doing this online.

Can you suggest reliable sites?

Newegg is a great company unlike the majorty. I build custom computers and order parts from them every time. Everything arrives within 3 days and is packaged good. Perhaps amazon.com should work off this model.

newegg has never let me down. i have built multiple computers and i almost always buy the parts from newegg.

Awesome. I think I've decided then. Thanks, everyone. :)

AVOID BEST BUY. www.bestbuysux.org should be enough to explain why.

For a Mac, you can't go wrong with the Apple Store. IBM/Lenovo requires an online purchase. HP is available at Circuit City. And yes, Newegg is good for anything computer related. And they're good about returns too--my friend had to return a dead motherboard once and they were really nice about it!

mactech, almost every major company has hate websites so i wouldnt single out best buy. but the bigger the store usually the sloppier their service, deliverys get.

personally i buy computers at www.apple.com
:)
the campus i will be attending has a computer store that gets super good deals on laptops, so ill be waiting to buy my next laptop until i get to school.

yeah the education discount is awesome. i saved like 200 on my powebook last year which pretty much just paid for taxes but the apple store gave me an ipod as well. the school im going to this fall has an apple store on campus, one about a mile away, and one in the mall about two miles away.

I read some of the stories on www.bestbuysux.com, and I have one word: WOW. People are seriously plauged with headuptheassitis. One person blamed Best Buy for an EULA on a product by Microsoft.

Just wow.

This one, however, took the prize for pure headuptheassness:

As a 46 year old male with 5 children, I found it odd when a 18 year old clerk asked to see my drivers license to buy Quake4. I asked him why. He replied, "it is the law". Of course I refused and did not buy the game. I called the store manager to find out about this "law". He could not produce it. I informed him there was NO law. Both state attempts (CA & MI) had been knocked down by Federal courts. He was now claiming ESRB prevented the sale without ID. I informed him that ESRB is not a law. He claimed he would contact the legal department and call back. 3 weeks later, he has not.

So, on 16APR2006, I call the 888 number for customer service. After explaining thw story again, the call taker checks with a "supervisor" then tells me it is store policy to get ID from EVERYBODY.

Since when is BB my moral guardian? Where do the get the gall to ID me for a GAME. When did they become a government agency?

My whole family, extended included, shall never walk into a BB again. Not that they care. It is obvious that BB does not.

This is the same type of idiot who would later blame id Software for his son shooting up his school. I really hate people.

go shop on EBAY!!! cheap computers and laptops! .....just dont buy the $500 cheap-ass computers that look kool and the stuff in it looks good and stuff....cuz those break in less than 6 months

Try newegg, look for the laptops with good reviews

eBay - just make sure it has a warranty

I know what you mean! They spend forever trying to tell you that YOU ABSOLUTELY NEED this and that and something else, and you're thinking "you're a moron"..... UGH

I think I'm gonna go for newegg. I looked at the Sony Vaios and I REALLY loved them but they are also REALLY expensive. I found a decent one in newegg with pretty good reviews and it was something I can afford.

Thanks for all the input, everyone. :)

i bought a Toshiba Qosmio F25-AV205 laptop with Windows Media Center for $1400 off ebay! it was a great buy you should consider ebay, they have great deals

Lenovo has the V100 lineup coming out tomorrow. Intel Core Duo, Ultra- portable, xp pro, dual layer burner, software(no one gives you software), 802.11 a/b/g, lenovo a/b/g. Case is very strong, one button backup, one button dvd or cd play (don't have to boot windows), and a good warranty. All for $1000. Best deal your money can buy.

Good:
Sony
Lenovo
Alienware
Falcon NW

Ok:
Compaq
HP

Bad:
Dell
Toshiba
Emachines

I bought stuff from newegg (my 300 dollar mp3 player) n they are pretty good.

when u buy things from ebay, make sure u see the seller's reviews.. (more reviews the better) If they have warranty, the better (My external 120 gb HD broke (the one i got from ebay) and my warranty covered it.)

^ I have Dell (and so does my bro.. he's the computer geek of the family) and it works just fine and never gave me any trouble. Celeron processor is infamous, but its actually not that bad. and my father used toshiba for however many years. It served him well all the years he used it. (before he dropped it and broke the screen that is)

Compaq's pretty good too. We bought a computer like 5-6 years ago from compaq and its still running... sure not as good compared to our new ones but its not that bad if the only thing you do is use the internet and type things. (we did upgrade the ram so its faster)
