S22 wants to apply to the UK for engineering. He is currently taking AP Phys-C and AP Calc-BC, but those are his only APs. Can he apply with just 2 AP results? He has 1410 on SAT(750 math). Only a 3.5 US GPA, mostly due to a rough 2nd semester of 11th grade after a year of virtual school and Covid isolation. He attended a top independent secondary school in the UK for Y9 and Y10 and still misses the UK and prefers UK education.
Also confused about deadlines. We thought the deadlines were January 15th, but it seems like so many people have already submitted their applications?
His first stab at the UCAS 5 (but I’m sure many or most of these are unrealistic)
Edinburgh
UCL
ICL
Southampton
Bath
He has also applied to some US universities. We understand that the UK unis would wait until July AP results come out.
Would appreciate any advice here since it feels like we are flying blind…
Thanks
Shannon
We’re in the UK and my D22 is applying to both UK and US universities. The deadline for Oxford, Cambridge and medicine/dentistry was 15 October but other universities and courses have later deadlines (e.g., UCL - 26 Jan 2022).
Take a look at the individual universities and courses of interest for information on entry requirements (including for US high schoolers), deadlines, etc. For example, here’s the UCL entry requirements for US students:
Accepted equivalent qualification(s) for United States of America
Award of 5, 5, 5, 5, 4 in five AP subjects, taken in the final three years of high school. The successful completion of one year of study at a recognised US university, Community or Junior College, with an overall CGPA of 3.3/4.0 (equivalent to a 2.1) may also be considered.
Please see ‘A Levels’ for subject requirements. Where A* is required at A Level, 5 will be required in the relevant full-year AP subject; for A, 5 will be required; and for B, 4 will be required. Where Mathematics or Physics is required, applicants will be asked to present specific AP subjects. For further information on the required subjects, please refer to United States of America. If you are unsure whether you satisfy the subject requirements, please contact Undergraduate Admissions for advice.
Good luck!

Any particular area of interest within engineering? The list of schools is good (would add Warwick maybe) but as others said five APs (and generally all grade five) will be required to be competitive for Imperial, UCL, or Warwick. Bath and Southampton may be easier, but if he can get Imperial, go Imperial without a doubt - best place for specialist engineering in the UK.

Two APs is not going to be enough.

A third AP can be self-studied (just sit the exam). Of the UK unis St Andrews is most likely to be flexible.
Also look at Ireland- similar educational approach and strong engineering programs. He meets the Trinity College Dublin Engineering requirements (for US applicants they look at GPA / SAT, unlike the UK).

For Engineering, in regards to the reputation of universities in this field:
Tier 1 - Cambridge, Oxford and Imperial
Tier 2 - UCL, Manchester, Leeds and Sheffield
Tier 3 - Bristol, Cardiff, Southampton, Heriot–Watt and Birmingham
Good in a certain niche - Edinburgh (Energy & Power), KCL (Telecoms), Warwick (Automotive) and Robert Gordon (Oil & Gas)
All others I would not say I have seen particularly distinguished themselves.
As for qualifications for entry, I would advise to follow @LostInTheShuffle’s advice by looking at each universities website. This said, I doubt 2 APs would beat the cut for being accepted in any reputable engineering degree programme in the UK.
