My DS just found out that he cannot take all of the classes he had originally chosen for senior year and has to choose between AP Euro and AP Spanish because the two conflict. AP Spanish is the only Spanish option offered at his school and Euro is the only real Social Studies offering. He really wants to take both and his area of interest for college is international relations so he should really be taking both. His only option seems to be to take one of the classes online as it would be difficult for him to get to a local college for dual enrollment. Has anyone taken AP Spanish online? If so, any recommendation re program? Is it hard to take a language online? The AP Euro teacher is supposed to be amazing and DS hasn’t had the opportunity to have that teacher yet so would probably prefer to take that class in person if Spanish is doable online.
I have not taken AP Spanish online, but I have taken online language classes. Honestly, I do NOT recommend taking a language class online. Effectively learning a language requires in-person communication. Grammar will be easy to nail, but pronunciation will be overlooked completely, and speaking is a big part of the AP exam. I’m not saying it’s not doable, because it is, but your son will have to take the initiative to make sure he is prioritizing the class (not putting it off for the weekend!) and making sure he is taking the time to work on actually speaking the language. Languages, especially, are very easy to get lazy on, because Google Translate is a click away.
If it were me, I would take AP Euro online, just because it’s history, and history is reading from textbooks & powerpoints anyway.
