Which art colleges are best in terms of Illustration, sequential art, graphic novels?

Also I know sva and mcad have some those programs…are they both the best or is it just one of them?

Check out SCAD because their illustration dept. offers a minor in sequential art:

I e=did hear bad things about Scad is it that bad of a school back then…or nowadays it has gotten better?

Have no idea what you heard. SCAD is ranked pretty high in several fields, though I have no idea about Illustration specifically. Both GD and animation, for instance, are considered to be good programs.

You know the student reviews all over the internet about how bad scad is…Or is it just the students who are just trolling with the bad reviews?

Ah. Yes, there are bad reviews from former students and faculty. And there are good reviews. The student work in some of its programs appears to be quite impressive - like any art school, it’s going to work for some and not others. Nothing beats visiting and kicking the tires. The best art school in the world won’t work for you if it’s just not the right place or program and you can get a great sense of that when you visit. I wouldn’t dismiss it based on internet commentary because I simply wouldn’t know the actual circumstances behind the complaint. If a school has a great reputation in an area of interest, it probably merits at least a look-see. IMHO.

My daughter went to MCAD (illustration) and her friend went for sequential art. Last I heard MCAD was one of the few schools that had a major in SA. D is freelancing doing illustration for kids books. Friend is working for the post office, doing art for her Patrion folks.

redbug so you saying that the sequential art program at MCAD didn’t hook her friend up with the big comic book companies or any other cartoon company in America or outside the states? If that’s the case then I rather go to sV or SCAD

@LastAirbender I can’t speak to an individual’s situation but a lot of kids at MCAD like to do their own projects and take a steady job in order to support that for the time being. And a lot more do freelance (including for some big players). Finally, do keep in mind that if landing your perfect “dream job” right out of college is what you require then you probably DON’T want to be going to art school.

Here are the comic and animation sites from MCAD. You can see that an internship is required (IMHO one of the best parts about that curriculum) and some of the employers are pretty impressive. You can also check out what the alums are doing. Judge for yourself whether it’s a program worth looking into further:

I do wanna be a comic book artist/writer for a company like image comics… I wanna create my own unique comic books its like a mixture between american comics and manga. That’s what I wanna do no matter what but i’m trying to be real careful on which art college I choose to help me get the connections I need to make it happen

Mamelot and also you right no matter what school you go to…you will probably not land your dream job right after college most students don’t…but if you keep trying to pursue your dreams then you can make it happen

Sure that makes sense but your training and ultimately your portfolio will get the job for you. Connections will just get you an interview.

Look at a variety of programs and try to visit some of them. Find out the placement rates for the programs that interest you. Tour the facilities. You’ll have a much better idea once you do all that. It’s hard to pin down just one “best” school at this stage - and even if you do pin one down, you may find that the cost is prohibitive. Best to check out and apply to several and then see what they offer you.

Edit/Update: Just saw your last comment. Agreed!

Good luck to you!

Thanks man…much appreciative!
