I really want to go to a Christian college, but I also don’t want to ruin my chances of getting into a med school like Duke or Johns Hopkins. I’m considering Berry, Covenant, ORU, and Samford.
Can anyone give me opinions on any of these schools and the chances I’ll have of getting into med school if I go to one of them?
The average applicant has a college gpa of 3.55 and a MCAT of 29. What are you scores so we can compare and see? Oh you don’t have any? Then any chances are pretty meaningless, aren’t they? Half of students who intend med school change that intention after the first year of college.
Mostly getting into med school is up to you. But you should go to a college that will train and challenge you. It helps if there is good premed advising. Almost all schools say they have high rates of acceptance but this is a fudged number for many reasons. Perhaps you will want to browse the Med school forum for more tips.
As @BrownParent notes, med school admission is strongly numbers-driven. GPA and MCAT scores are paramount. Attending an accredited, nationally known Christian college should not–in and of itself–work against your being admitted to a big-name medical school…
There are other factors that you might want to consider, however. For example, many pre-med students try to gain lab/research/hospital experience as undergrads. That would be harder to accomplish at a rural campus like Berry or Covenant than it would at a more urban school like Samford.
You might also want to add Wheaton (outside of Chicago) to your list. It is strong in the life sciences and has a good reputation as a pre-med school. It is also widely considered the most academically rigorous evangelical Christian college in the nation.
From your list, Samford and Berry would be the best academically, but also look into Wheaton (Illinois), Calvin (MI), Hope (MI - Christian college that’s famous for its highly successful pre-health programs), perhaps GOrdon (MA).
Have you thought of Furman? While not a Christian school any more officially, it still has a large Christian population. My DD was accepted there and received $35K from them, but has decided on a Christian school. They have higher than usual undergraduate research and a very high acceptance rate to med school. You can look up the stats but they were significant.
Check out Mercer University also: according to its website, while it is no longer officially affiliated with a Baptist Convention, it “remains committed to an educational environment that embraces the historic Baptist principles of intellectual and religious freedom, while affirming values that arise from a Judeo-Christian understanding of the world.”
I have a cousin who went to medical school from Mercer, also.
Thanks everyone for the replies
Georgetown or BC.
Holy Cross has great pre-med program.
Samford has an excellent pre medicine program.
Point Loma Nazarene University also has an excellent pre med program. Their acceptance rates for medical and health related graduate schools are +90%. As an aside, I am a faculty there (not in the sciences) and can vouch that the science faculty are top notch instructors, researchers, and people. The ocean view is also a nice perk.
Holy Cross has one of the better pre-med programs with great med school alumni network(1 Nobel Prize Winner, current President of AMA, top Docs at NIH).
