Currently I’m a sophomore and I’m signed up to take 6 AP/IB classes next year as well as advanced band. I could probably get A’s in all of them, but the amount of time I will have for extracurriculars and studying for the SAT will be cut severely. Also, my parents have health problems which will require time from me and I’m not confident that I’ll be able to perform well enough on the final tests… I have over 100 in all of my classes atm, but that’s probably due more to my ridiculous work ethic than to my intelligence because I don’t find myself to be particularly smart. The following are the classes I’m signed up for:
-APUSH
-AP English Literature and Composition
-AP Calc BC
-AP Physics 1
-IB Comp Sci HL 1
-IB Spanish SL 1
I’m not completely sure of what college or colleges I want to go to yet but JHU and UPenn are ones that I’m interested in. Furthermore, I am probably going to major in something related to engineering or science. I can’t decide on which of these classes to drop, but I’ve thought about dropping down from Calc BC to Calc AB even though math is my best subject. Which of these classes do you think I should drop?
If your interested in math and science drop down one of your humanities/language classes. I wouldn’t drop down to AB if I were you.
Can you take English honors instead of AP lit ? If you really love reading, you could take it senior year.
Can you switch CS hl for AP CS Principles ? You could take AP CS A senior year and still be fine for any stem program.
My D17 just finished AP Lit, and while it’s not one of the famously extremely challenging classes (looking at you, AP Calc), it is very time intensive. If you have difficulty making the best use of your time, or if you want more down time for hobbies/EC, I’d suggest switching that class for an English class that’s less of a time suck.
Unfortunately, there is no intensified/honors English class offered for juniors at my school. That is mainly why I signed up for AP English. I’m not sure that my school will offer AP CS Principles next year but I’ll check.
