I'm in the process of enrolling for a new school. I'm a senior in high school, and I'm fairly sure I want to pursue a career in either psychology or computer science. I took AP psych last year, and my current school offers AP Computer science...bShould I enroll in that, or go with a safer choice like AP Physics? There is a restriction on the number of APs we can take, and I'm stuck between the two. I have enough science credits already. Would AP CS look good since that's what I'm interested in, or would the admissions board think I'm not challenging myself enough for not taking a difficult science class? I'm also taking 3 other AP classes though so is that really a concern?

So you already have had a physics course?

Taking 4 AP’s can be very challenging. You want to do well in the classes you do take. You should have some idea if you can handle it or not.

I’m confident that I can do well; I have taken 4 APs at a time before so I know what it’s like.

Also, I haven’t taken a physics course. I wrote that I took AP psychology after I mentioned my interests, which I’m guessing you read as physics. I’m just wondering if taking classes in things I’m passionate about outweighs taking something like AP Physics, or if skipping a science class senior year would be a mistake, even if it is replaced by an AP I’m very interested in.

So I’ve been snooping around the Yale website recently, and they have some advice on undergrad admissions that I think someone as competitive as you (4 APs…you go) would find valuable. They put a lot of emphasis on the student developing their passion and working with it in High School. That said (and I’m just assuming you want to get into a highly selective school here with your course load), most of those types of schools do have a science requirement. I would check on your prospective schools website about the requirements, or Collegeboard. When you create an account, they have a tool that allows you to see what types of courses are required for a certain school. Hope this helps and good luck!
