Hi, i'm an incoming freshmen and i'm wondering how this policy is applied at UCSD?

-Basically a pass/no pass is where you receive no grade for the course

I was just wondering then

a) Which classes are you allowed to do this for? (any cores like math, science etc...)
b) What are the repercussions for doing so? for example, will you not get credit for it or something?
c) Will you have met GE requirements even if you take this option?

*Also, just out of curiosity, is a single 4 credit class one quarter long at UCSD or what? Because i was wondering what a good number of classes i could take per quarter would be

cheers,

a) it depends on your major. Go search up your major requirements list and there should be a note on there that tells you what you can and cannot take for P/NP. If it doesn’t say, you can contact your advisor - there should be an open time window for freshmen during August. As a general rule all upper division major classes cannot be taken for P/NP.

For example, psychology majors can take all lower divs (math, bio…) for P/NP except statistics. For biology majors, all major classes must be taken for a letter grade.

b) It won’t count to fulfilling your major requirements. Which means you won’t get your degree. Which means just don’t do it – I imagine it’ll be a mess to deal with.

c) In general most GEs can be taken P/NP and still count to your GE requirements. I think the writing sequences are the only GEs that must be taken for a letter grade – go look at your college GE sheets.

*Yes, any class you sign up for the quarter (Fall 2012, Winter 2013…) only lasts for that quarter. Typically people sign up for 3 or 4 classes (4 units ea.) their first quarter at SD.

Hey! Thankyou for the reply

Do you know if the decision to take the option is reversible once you commit to it???

ahahha!

cheers,

there is a deadline every quarter. so until that date, you can switch your grading options. check the ucsd academic/enrollment calendar. i think it’s like 1 or 2 weeks after the quarter starts (don’t quote me though, check it!).

You have until week 4 of every quarter to change your decision.

Good numbers to remember: week 2 is add deadline, week 4 is drop deadline with no W and change to/from P/NP, week 9 is drop deadline with W.

Thanks for the additional details!

@momosky Forgive me for asking but what do you mean by “W”? ahah and by “drop” do you mean that you can just quit the class completely by week 9?

thx
