Hi guys, I got accepted to Johns Hopkins but unfortunately, even with the scholarship, I can’t afford it.
So I picked my other choices: RIT and SUNY at Buffalo.
I want to study Biotechnology, which one of these two is the best?
Thank you!
P.S: I’m an international student, so I can’t get loans.
I personally love RIT’s programs because of the co-op programs(It’s my top school!). You get a lot of hands on experience before graduating and you will probably leave with a job or many job offers.
SUNY at Buffalo (I think your talking about UB right?) has a good program but the school itself is decent. I live 5 minutes away and my school does a lot with UB but I don’t particularly enjoy some of their programs for other majors.
I definitely think that even with RIT having a higher cost you get more out of the program and school, but you should really visit both and see how you feel about each campus and look deeper into their programs for Biotech.
(Question, did you apply to RIT ED or RD and when? I applied RD and haven’t gotten a decision back yet :/)
First congratulations on having two excellent and affordable choices. I would say to visit both but that may be impossible as an international. Offhand, I think that if Johns Hopkins was your top choice, that RIT might be the better match for you in that both Hopkins and RIT are pretty STEM oriented school and are close in size.
I didn’t apply yet. They both contacted me and gave me a fee waiver telling me to apply to their institutions. They told me they could give me a good scholarship based on my SAT scores.
Ok, that’s not how it goes.
Now, you apply to JHU’s peers: Rice, URochester, probably also RPI.
You ALSO apply to BOTH Suny Buffalo AND RIT.
And then you see what happens.
Until you actually HAVE the scholarship, you can’t say they “gave it to you”.
There are lots of marketing ploys out there.
in English, we say “Don’t count your chicken before they hatch”
Don’t consider yourself to have been accepted or to get funding until you get the offer. Many students misinterpret marketing as offers (as noted above). People with 800s across the board may be told they’d get full funding if they get in but they can be rejected. Scores are important but they are only one part of an application.
@iLukas - Take note of the comments above. Sounds as if you just received some marketing materials. You’re not admitted until you apply AND receive an acceptance letter. You don’t have a scholarship until you receive a specific offer in writing.
