So I'm a senior in HS this year and I'm applying. Between SUNY's Albany, New Paltz, and Stony Brook, which is the best? (Based on education, social, quality, dorming, etc). I want to do something with medicine and SB seems like the best idea but do the others offer pre-med or pre-pharmacy majors (or have good ones). I wanted to go to UBuffalo really but it's too far. So yeah, opinions please?

Thanks (:

Buffalo too far? What is your limit?

What are your stats?

do the others offer pre-med or pre-pharmacy majors

There isn’t such a thing as “pre-med” or “pre-pharm” majors. You major in what you want, but make sure that you take the needed bio, chem, organic chem, physics and calc classes.

Any good school can prepare you for med school or pharm school. Your GPA and your MCAT or PCAT score are going to largely determine whether you get into med or pharm school.

Do you live near a SUNY? If so, which one?

Do you have any concerns about paying for college or will your parents pay for wherever you go?

The closest is Stony Brook which is about an hour/hour and a half away.

My stats are 86 GPA, 1840/1830 sat scores, two years of badminton club and one year of table tennis (ping pong) club.

Paying for college is a major factor which is why SUNY’s are my choice. I live in NYC btw.

*My stats are 86 GPA, 1840/1830 sat scores, *

Is that your weighted GPA? I think an 86 is a B average. Do you have a 3.0? Weighted?

OK…what does that mean?

Do you have a lowish income?

Or…does your family have a good income, but they can’t pay a lot for college.

you also might consider looking at some SUNY’s or CUNYs that might give you some merit money.

Does anyone know if any SUNYs give scholarships for this student’s stats?

The ones I’m seeing seem to require a 90.

However, if this student’s weighted GPA is higher, maybe that will work.

If you go to a website like w w w. u n i g o. c o m and c o l l e ge p r o w l e r. com, you will get perspectives from many students at each of those campuses.

You really need to visit all the schools to get a feel for the campus, student life and academics. Each one is very different.

If you really want UB, you should apply! UB is the only SUNY school with a PharmD program. It’s not Outer Mongolia…there’s an airport close to UB, an Amtrak station, and UB offers coach round trip bus service to the city several times a semester. It’s actually quite easy to get to Buffalo and there’s a large contingent of NYC/LI kids there.

But, it’s not easy to maintain a 3.5 in the required pre-pharm/pre-med classes…so if you’re not prepared to study like mad 7 days a week, you might want to choose a school that offers smaller classes and/or an easier grading system.
