Well how things are going my parents couldn’t borrow those $5310. I would rather all the borrowing go on me. So coming out of college I’m alright owing around $20,000. With me money is the main problem.

I think you misunderstand…if you take out all the loans, you will owe a lot more than $20k

(The top 2 loans which equal $5500 will increase each year to $6500, 7500, 7500 for a total of $27k)

Federal Direct loan-subsidized $3,500
Federal Direct loan-Unsubsidized $2,000

And…you’ll have this amount to cover with some kind of loan.
Federal Direct Plus load eligibility: 5,310 (this will also likely increase, so at least $22k)
**

So, they will expect you to borrow at least $50k and have about a $3k gap every year.**

You need to find out how YOU could borrow the Plus loan amount. YOU can’t take out a Plus loan. That is for parents. It may be hard for you to borrow that amount since you’re already borrowing the maximum Stafford ($5500) for freshmen. You may need co-signers.

I would contact Loyola and tell them that your parents will not borrow the Plus loan amount and see if they will increase their grant amount.

You’re a URM, right? If so, they may especially want you and try to help you. What URM are you?

^^^^

*
I would contact Loyola and tell them that your parents will not borrow the Plus loan amount and see if they will increase their grant amount.*

Also, I would ask for $3k work-study to cover that gap.

Well if loyola turns out to be my best bet and in a week when they finalize my tax forms if the numbers turn out the same I will need to call them in that case. Is is alright to call colleges and ask them for that type of extra help? I don’t want to come on to them like I’m greedy or something. Its just that my parents have a lot of dept. My brother goes to George town University and my sister just finished at maryland institute college of art

I’m sure they want you.

It’s perfectly ok for you to contact them and say that at this point, their package isn’t affordable since it contains a gap that your parents can’t cover. You can also say that you’re hesitant to take out that much in loans.

Also mention that you wonder what future years’ FA packages will look like.

I’m sure that you’ll do this in a polite manner. Sound appreciative of what has been offered so far, and state how much you want to attend their school.

However, simply state that you’re concerned about the gaps and loans. Let them know that your family cannot help you in any way. If they refuse to offer additional funding, then contact again and request some work-study (but don’t mention w/s in the first letter…we want to see if they’ll first cover that gap with their own grants.)

Send the email to the director of Financial aid and the director of admissions. Both will likely be able to have influence to improve your package if it’s possible.

Be sure to thank them for their time and attention to your concerns. :)

Hopefully this all turns out good becuase I believe Loyola would be my best bet if Virginia tech and George Washington don’t work out now. So when i ever do this, is email the best way to do this?

With the director of Financial aid and the director of admissions who would be the best person to contact. Is it alright to just contact the financial aid office in general?

Thank you so much for the help again.

I would send an email to both people…director of FA and director of admissions. Both would be involved with the enrollment management of the school. You are a desirable applicant because of your URM status. Both would have an interest in getting you to attend their school.

Good luck…let us know how it goes. :)

I got accepted to the university of Delaware. Thursday I will know if i got into George Washington university (keeping my figures crossed!). I have to hold back on emailing loyola. I don’t want to annoy them about aid when I still may not even go there. So is financial aid at the university of Delaware really that bad for out of state?

*So is financial aid at the university of Delaware really that bad for out of state? *

Very likely.

I was not accepted to George Washington University. So thinking about things what are the chances I will get into Virginia tech

I think I will go ahead and send an email to the Loyola director of Financial aid and the director of admissions. Along with that would it be safe to ask if it is possible to join their honors program? See the thing is they are covering everything but that’s only for me commuting. I live around 25 minutes away from Loyola. There’s a couple reasons why I would rather live there. Also i can’t seem to find the emails. If possible can someone link me to the page with the emails?

-Again thanks to everyone who is helping me out. Really need help with this.:)

Here’s how my Delaware financial aid turned out

Award Category Career Amount Offered
Federal Perkins Loan Loan Undergraduate $1,500.00
Federal SEOG Grant Undergraduate $1,000.00
Federal Pell Grant Grant Undergraduate $5,000.00
Federal College Work-Study Work/Study Undergraduate $1,500.00
Federal DL Subsidized Loan Loan Undergraduate $3,500.00
Federal DL Unsubsidized Loan Loan Undergraduate $2,000.00
Univ of Del Need-Based Grant Grant Undergraduate $10,000.00

Total $24,500.00

It cost $32,000 a year so things didn’t turn out too great there. Is it possible to ask for more help or since I’m out of state that would do no good?
