Which colleges have singles for freshmen?

Are there any schools where a freshman has a reasonable chance of getting a single? We'd prefer the northeast. Also, any tips on getting a single?

Terrible criteria from which to choose a college... but perhaps someone will have an answer.

Yea i definitely want a single

At Vanderbilt, the majority of freshmen have singles

Penn has singles...........the most dependable tip is become a development admit.....hehehe that secures everything.

Columbia...

It's not the criteria for choosing the college. Just need to know.

So basically you are making a list of colleges that offer singles and then you will select from that list...........same thing as choosing a school because it has singles the way I read it. I can understand that you can have a criteria that suits you but my guess is most schools have some way for you to get what you want.

Without getting into the specifics of my daughter's situation, let me remind everyone that there are reasons a freshman might need a single other than desiring privacy for that hot Saturday night date, not being very sociable, or simply wanting to keep a messy room. A doctor's note will be involved. Okay now?

wackymother,

You can probably get a single at pretty much any college in the country especially as you state your daughter may have a medical reason for obtaining a single. Schools that normally don't have singles will make accomodations. If you check out the residential life section of the school that your daughter is interested in applying to, many do have floor plans and lay out the configuration of the dorms. Your best bet is to look at schools as many schools have different pricing structures for the type of dorm you are placed in.

hope this helps

Sybbie, thanks for your thoughtful reply. I went to a state school (many years ago) and singles were out of the question--people were tripled up and they still are there. My husband went to a private college and, as it happened, he had a doctor's note plus some unusual circumstances but did not get a single. I'm just trying to find out if it's a bit more likely to get a single at some schools over others. It would make a big difference in my DD's college experience.

Thanks again!

I'd say that you don't need to sign a contract with the school if they cannot meet your daughter's needs. I know of several kids who have singles with an authenticated request. I thought your question sounded like you had a reason and that is why I said at most schools. Just remember that times have changed since your husband was in college.

Mills College has, I believe, only singles (or at least a vast majority of singles). Of course, it's an all-women's college, which may raise other issues . . .

yea but it is in Ca and a great location. I have friends who are at Mills and they love it. http://www.mills.edu/

At Williams College, something like 65% of freshmen are in singles, and like 85% of all students are in singles.
In my opinion, it is the best housing I've ever seen.

The number of singles at Williams will be higher next year, when Mission Park becomes a freshman dorm (Mission is all singles).

Hansel, is it really 65% right now for freshmen? That sounds high for this year.

If you would look at midwest, Lake Forest has about 50% of all rooms single so chances of getting it as freshman pretty high. Good LAC as well.

I think most colleges will meet the needs of a student with a medical and or disability by allowing a double to be a single if no singles available. My S has a friend at a large state U that received a private room due to his ADHD. My D received a private her 2nd semester after medical documentation that the roommate situation was contributing to debilitating migraines.

Mills College in Oakland has 90% of freshmen in singles

Jpar:
I don;t know for sure.
That was what I heard during my campus tour back in August, it may be different this year.
Regardless, those dorms rock!
