Which colleges have the most students go onto med school?

If it is at all possible, can someone make a list, or post a link, about which colleges have the most premed students currently? A pre med student, I think, is a student that has fulfilled or is planning to fulfill all the prerequisites that medical schools require, right? However, I don't know if colleges even publish this info, but a list of which ones have the most pre med students can help me a lot. To be clear, I am not asking "which colleges have the best pre-med programs" or something like that. From reading around, it seems that it is pretty much impossible to rank colleges based on pre med programs accurately because of a variety of reasons. However, can we assume that a college with more "pre med students" is a more popular undergrad college for med students? And if so, doesn't that mean they are doing something right?

On the other hand, what about a list of colleges that produce the most amount of students that get accepted into a medical school? I figure that this might be a more plausible/accurate telling of which schools truly are more successful in their teaching endeavors, but the problem is that the obvious ones will be at the top. Of course, HYPS and WashU and JHU will produce the most probably, but what about the ones below those? If you go further down from the top ten, it seems to get less clear about which schools really do have success in preparing their students for med school. Once again, i understand that asking for a ranking of best premed programs is based largely on opinion, but what about just a list of cold calculated numbers? I understand that this probably a poor way to find a school, and make no mistake, this will not be the only factor in my decision making process. But I was told to find schools that i liked over a variety of "eliteness" so to speak, and once you go below the obvious top tens, its harder for me to decipher which schools perhaps offer more of a challenge or prepare me better than other schools. I'm aiming for a top school, my grades are very competitive, an above average school, one that is harder to get in than the average school and has a more challenging/helpful med advisers than the average school, an "average" school where i have very high chances of getting in, but still have a good amount of pre med students, and perhaps a very easy school to get into if all else fails.

My thought process here is that schools with more students that go on to med school are likely to have more experience in advising aspiring med students, and obviously, have mroe success with their curriculum. I also understand that the type of med school that they go onto also matters, like a med student that gets accepted into Harvard med is probably carries more weight than a med student that goes to a 3rd tier med school. But at this point, i just want an idea of which schools i should be looking at, cause aside from schools like HYPS, I know nothing about any other colleges.

Any help would be really appreciated, and any input on my thinking process would help a lot too. If you have any questions, just ask. Thanks in advance.

You’re making a large number of faculty assumptions, including

1) equating number of applicants with the quality of the preparation (Bigger schools produce larger numbers of med school applicants simply because they have more students.)

2) medical schools have significantly different quality (Harvard is alot better than a “third tier” med school. There is no such thing as a “third tier” medical school. Unlike undergrad, medical school education is fairly standardized and there aren’t the big disparities among programs like there is at the undergrad level.)

3) the coursework required for med school admission is fairly low level introductory courses that are widely available at every college

4) the difficulty/quality of those intro level classes is going to depend a great deal upon the individual instructor. You can have a terrible in instructor at top tier school and a great instructor at a low ranked college.

5) colleges published acceptance rates actually mean something

Please read this thread first:

RE: medical school acceptance rates from various undergrad are meaningless

To see why, read this thread:

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/pre-med-topics/1484178-if-you-high-school-please-read-before-posting.html</a></p>

Ok, I see. Sorry for my assumptions. What im really trying to get at here is find other colleges that I would like. Like i said before, I have very little to no knowledge of any of the colleges under HYPS etc, and im going to be realistic and assume i probably won’t get into those. I know that i would really prefer a school that matches my academics, as BDM puts it: “you want to be a good academic match for your program.” Since i do have competitive grades and solid SAT scores, i want a more elite school than the average joe cause im pretty confident i could pull that off. I know that I should be looking for a “field diverse school” but that doesn’t mean i want to go to a school with a weak or overrated pre med courses/teachers.

At this point, i don’t think I’m even asking the right questions. I haven’t applied to any colleges because I don’t even know any colleges. Like I said, this “list” is more of a way for me to find some competitive colleges other than the obvious ones. My school’s guidance counselor is new and I’ve talked to her a few times. Frankly, shes not much help to be honest. I may be wrong or stupid or whatever, but a second opinion usually won’t hurt me right? So thats what I am really trying to ask for I guess… Any ideas?

Try posting your stats, state of residency and college preferences (location, size, urban-suburban-rural, public-private, financial restrictions, etc) on the college search and/or parents forums to get suggestions.

~~~~~
Remember this–college is what you make of it. You can get a great education at third tier college or huge public uni if you know how to work the system and pro-actively seek out opportunities. Conversely you can get a crappy education at a great school if you pick the wrong classes or have a poor work ethic.
Also at most colleges, you’ll find the most able student tend to cluster in few STEM majors (which includes pre-med).
Here are stats from the AMA re the colleges with the most applicants to med school. Among the publics, there are Michigan, Florida, and UCLA, while privates include Hopkins, Duke, Cornell, and WUSTL.
https://www.aamc.org/data/facts/applicantmatriculant/86042/table2.html</a></p>
Unfortunately the schools with the highest number of students will probably have the highest number of applicants so it doesn’t tell you anything. For example, a public university with 20,000 undergrads will undoubtedly have more than a smaller private with 5,000. That being said, I posted a while back the top schools with applicants to WUSTL over a period of years:
Washington University 207
Harvard University 88
Duke University 79
Stanford University 72
University of California-Berkeley 51
Northwestern University / University of Michigan-Ann Arbor 48
Yale University /Cornell University 46
University of Illinois-Champaign Urbana 42
Princeton University 41
Massachusetts Institute of Technology 39
Brown University 38
Johns Hopkins University 37
University of Pennsylvania / University of California-Los Angeles 36
Rice University 33
Anyone have an opinion about SMU?
My opinion has been just go to UG that fits you personally the best, do well, get decent MCAT, get your medical ECs and apply to Med. Schools that again fits you the best and match to your stats and YOU WILL BE JUST FINE. You are the deal maker, NOT the college that you attend. My D. and her friends (many of them are at Med. School now) have successfully use this approach. It works, no calculations, no tricks of any sorts, just pure diligence and hard work.
kdogg,
is that list applicants (meaningless, anyone can apply), acceptances or matriculants (which not only is a testament to whether you have the stuff to get in but whether you want to go to WUSTL. Plenty of people turn down WUSTL because they don’t want to be in STL)
IWBB, it is matriculants. ;)
yeah, i was surprised by the idea that you had found an applicant list
kdog - over how many years and which time period.
@texaspg, that I am not sure of. I pulled it off their web site a while back and I will have to see if I can still find it as I converted to a Word document with the colleges that had 18 or more students listed.
Found it
[Who Chooses WU](http://medadmissions.wustl.edu/HowtoApply/selectionprocess/Pages/WhoChoosesWU.aspx)
Under Undergraduate institutions Represented and it’s from 1995-2011.
@IWBB, I’m sure there are students that do turn it down but with their stringent GPA/ MCAT requirements (average LizzyM score is 76.3) I would bet it’s a lot more that are rejected. ;)
You’d be surprised! Medical schools in general rely heavily on waitlists, because their classes are so small and so many of them turn out to want the same students in the first place. :)
Wayoutwestmom and everyone else, I made a thread about my stats and other info, here it is:
http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/college-search-selection/1493005-can-anyone-help-me-match-my-academic-stats-ideal-school.html#post15820027</a></p>
Thanks for the link kdog. I am surprised they admitted someone with 3.42 or 28 MCAT when they average such high LizzyM scores.
mwang - you seem to be a sophomore. What is your goal with this thread exactly?
Well you know there are always unique exceptions but the average GPA is 3.91 with a 37.2 MCAT. ;)
Texaspg: like I said, it was mainly just to get a feel for the different colleges out there other than the ones I know, which sadly mainly consists of the Ivy Leagues and top tens, etc.
