Which colleges have this major?

I am a senior in high school and many apps are due in 12 days, but Christmas break is coming so I'm not too worried. I am very interested in both Computer Engineering/Science and Music, but the only two colleges I have found with a combined major specifically dedicated to these two subjects are Stanford's Music Science and Technology Major, and Lehigh's 5-year IDEAS program.

What are some other schools that have similar majors? Preferably in California, but I'm willing to go out of state.

Also, ACT 33 and GPA 4.42 if that helps.

This is out of state for you (Ohio), but Oberlin College has a Computer Science major along with a prestigious music conservatory. The double degree program (between the college of Arts&Sciences and the Music Conservatory) is five years I believe.

You would not be satisfied with one major, with elective courses in the other?

Many schools offer both majors, and may allow double majoring (probably easier if both are in the same division like Arts/Letters and Science, as opposed to computer science in an engineering division). However, both computer science (with programming assignments) and music (performance) courses can be very time consuming.

Thanks Kitten23!

And ucbalumnus, I would be happy double majoring, or even just minoring in music, but I like both subjects enough that ideally I’d like to find one that combines the two majors together.

To me (and this is totally theorizing): The difference would be, for example with a combined program, they would teach classes that focuses on aspects of computer science in electronic music, or how the sound waves of music work, explained by certain aspects of physics, etc. Whereas with just double majoring, I would be taking classes that just focus on computer engineering, or just performing music, with nothing to bridge the gap.

Maybe you should consider majoring in audio/sound engineering?

Have you specifically looked for electronic music?

Also check Indiana U at Bloomington.

Which Calif schools have you already applied to?

How much will your parents pay each year? That will largely determine where you should apply.

It is VERY hard to double major if one of the majors is eng’g. Eng’g majors already require more credits than other majors. They also have tightly sequenced courses and little space in the schedule for non-req’d classes.

Will you be coming in with a lot of AP credits? If so, consider schools that will give you lots of AP credits so that you can free up your schedule to take other courses.

I knew a couple of students at my kids’ undergrad who did what you’re asking, but I don’t know how they did it. They didn’t double major, but they were able to include those music technology classes as well. i believe both completed Music minors. One also included theater technology. They both came in with AP credits which allowed them to skip Calc, Frosh Comp, and some other classes…so they had room in their eng’g schedules.

Carnegie Mellon has a top notch computer science program and a world renowned fine arts program. The fine arts deadline was December 1, but if you’re accepted into CS or CIT you can easily take a minor in their program or transfer to their interdisciplinary majors.
