I posted something similar to this, but in my college search, which engineering schools are reasonable?
Some of my stats as a Junior:
30 ACT
4.2 GPA, will be around 4.4 GPA end of Junior year
4 AP classes this year
3 AP classes next year
2 leadership positions
100+ Volunteer hours
Mechanical Engineering hopeful
Will take SAT II tests
You have Purdue in your backyard. That should be on your list for sure. Cheap in state tuition and one of the best ME places on the planet. Apply by Nov. 1 to be eligible for its biggest scholarships.
Rose Hulman is in IN as well. Fantastic reputation, but pricier.
Purdue sounds like a good school for you. Strong engineering program, in state for you so very cheap, and you should be able to get in based on your stats.
UIUC/U Mich are two more good options, but both can be a little expensive due to OOS tuition. UMich OOS COE might be a reach; not sure how selective UIUC is but a friend did get in with similar scores.
Interesting. I heard that UMich is also really expensive for OOS, but they do have a really good engineering program (and all of the other school listed thus far and have quality programs). It seems I have a lot of research to do lol.
I think you need to talk to your parents about college budget and run the NPC for schools that you are looking at. First you say that “finances aren’t necessarily the biggest concern”, then you say UMich is “really expensive for OOS”. Find out if you qualify for need based aid. Find out how much your parents can and WILL contribute each year. I’d hate for you to have your heart set on a school that will be out of reach for your family financially.
You have good stats and have done very well. Please do the financial homework so you aren’t left disappointed in the end.
UMich IS very expensive for OOS – just like Purdue is expensive for OOS as well. My daughter considered both and the cost difference was amazing (we’re MI residents but have many relatives in IN)
Thanks for the advise guys! I really looked into each college and they all seem like great schools. And yeah, looking at Michigan OOS costs compared to other public schools, their cost difference is really high.
