Which computer are you all getting?

zante - i think we have the same lappie :D. yay! i agree it's very pretty

Yea I'm a sucker for a sexy machine. :p

Question:
How important (i.e., necessary to efficiency) do you think having a CD burner is within the computer?
D has an ibook now with a CD play capacity but not burn capacity. She uses a tiny little gadget -- darn, I forget the name of that small part -- to transfer data sometimes from & to her laptop. (Possibly called a "flash drive"?) Also has a portable floppy drive she hooks up to the USB port.
Weighing all this when debating using current ibook vs. buying P'ton's new.

Any help appreciated. Thanks much.

Well I used the burner a lot when I was listening to CDs, but after getting an ipod, I haven't used it all that much at all. I don't think it's absolutely necessary, especially since she can probably get a friend to burn her something if she really needed it.

Mea- I'm really depressed about my vaio. I was transferring some files to it yesterday and then it totally broke on me! It refuses to even power up. It's especially sad because it's so pretty, but I have to return it. :(

I ordered a powerbook from SCI instead.

Yeah, I've heard the Sony Vaios have some serious issues. I'm debating whether to get an Alienware Sentia or an Apple Powerbook.

ive decided im gonna go with that ibm tablet pc deal on facebook, soons they get the claimed specs on the official ibm site. it received 4.5/5 from pcmagazine (editor's choice).

the IBM X41 with 1.5 gHz is a real bargain for $1525.

Is it true that some Chinese company bought IBM and now a lot of their products are being shipped from Hong Kong?

Yea Bokonon, I had heard something about Vaios having problems but I got it anyway and it was a total mistake. Looking online, a forum has 55+ pages of people complaining of the same problem (can't start up). Good thing I bought it recently so I can just return it, although this fiasco's costing me $100 in shipping. The powerbook's like $500 more than the vaio but I think it'll be worth it.

Yeah, Lenovo bought the Thinkpad division of IBM, which is their laptops and notebooks. So its really a Lenovo/IBM X41.

Zante, one thing you might want to think about before getting the Powerbook is the Apple switch to Intel processors. So basically, after only one year you'll have an obsolete Apple.

It ****es me off how Apple doesn't disclose the dates of future upgrades too. I don't want to spend 2000 bucks on a Powerbook just to find out one day later that a new version has come out.

=(

There's been a lot of debate about the switch. Whether to wait, or whether prices will go down, etc. but I don't really care. I've given up trying to follow apple in all its updates. Like the ipod and every year there's a new generation. I was upset when I got the mini and then three months later they had the 20GB for only $50 more.

The point is, I need a computer NOW and as long as the apple continues to work I won't care what processor it has (seriously, I'm not tech-savvy enough to know the difference). Plus, SCI has a pretty nice deal since it has AppleCare and Microsoft Office included.

Btw, I just wanted to rant about how much taxes suck. Computers are expensive enough but I just had to pay $166 in taxes for my powerbook. The worst part is that when I was ordering it, they only gave me "estimated tax" which was 1/2 what it actually turned out to be.

ok, so im not going to princeton next year (MIT instead), but ive done a lot of research on notebooks and the best deal i found was from bestbuy.com. For $1200 you get a 1.73 GHz Pentium M processor, 100 GB hard drive, 128 MB integrated graphics card, 1 GB RAM, 15.4 WXGA TrueBrite Screen (? check actual name), DVD RW drive, plus a whole lot of installed software. Comes with XP Home, so might be a downside for those wanting XP Professional, but at that price you cant really complain. The computer and model number is HP Pavillion dv4170us, and is PC Magazine's Editor's Choice. Cheers!

Im actually on that same laptop right now (just got it a few days ago), and using it has been great.

wow thats an amazing deal

zante, did you order your Powerbook yet? I oredered mine on Tuesday and got confirmation from SCI, but none from Apple yet. Eeek! Have you heard from them?

Yea, I ordered mine on Thursday night and I got a confirmation from Apple on Friday. Maybe your email got marked as spam? Contact SCI come monday if you still haven't received a confirmation.
