Which Dorm is best for DAAP Students?

@DAAPDad - congratulations to your daughter! That’s a good idea to hit all the topics in one visit. Unfortunately we can’t attend the Honors brunch on March 4. We signed up for a DAAP close-up and will be meeting with a rep from the honors college this month. I’m working on speaking to someone about financial aid while I’m there but I don’t expect they will have details yet.

So far, the more my son learns about the ID program at UC the better it sounds. He’s also visited and applied to RISD, Pratt, RIT, CMU. I’m interested to see how UC program compares in person. I expect UC will be the most affordable school for us.

So we did the DAAP close-up tour this week and had a chance to see the Daniels dorms. It was not part of the official tour but a very nice tour guide arranged for us to take a quick look at Daniels 7th floor. It looks liveable, crowded, not too clean and very basic housing. Our guide is a third year student and he told us Daniels is the first dorm to fill up. He said many of his friends still speak fondly of freshman year in Daniels. My son is requesting a triple on the DAAP floor. He’s willing to give up some privacy so he can make more friends.
I was very impressed with the ID facilities and the program in general.
We learned more about the honors program and it looks like a good way to explore other interests outside of ID. My son is thinking about a study abroad/ co-op abroad and the honors program can help in that area.

My daughter and her roommate are deciding on dorms. They will be in the DAAP program. They have already gone through the process of room preference, personality survey, etc. and just waiting for the self-selection process (in May). Problem is they can’t decide on which dorm although Turner and Calhoun seem to be in the major running. They’re thinking Daniels 7th Floor may be too wild/loud? I personally think being with fellow DAAPers will help a great deal with social life and academics. They are open to getting two more DAAP roommates. But again which dorm is the big question. Are they isolating themselves if they do not live in Daniels 7th floor? Thanks for your input!

The DAAP floors in Daniels are, if anything, more quiet than the other floors. DAAPers are kept pretty busy, and spend a lot of time in Studio working on projects. When they do get back to Daniels, they’re pretty beat. That’s been my daughter’s experience, at least, and she had a quad on the Daniel’s 7th floor. Worked out perfectly for her, and she and two of her original roommates are still together in off-campus housing as juniors, and they’re all applying to Study Abroad in Germany next fall semester. Pretty inseparable.
