Which dorm?

Awesome: I guess his personality came across during the presentation. He wasn’t engaging and I felt he wanted to be somewhere else (anywhere but at Alumni Hall). Without the facilitator it would have been a true disaster – he certainly did his best to bring humor into the program and to cast a positive light over the Dean.

When we went to look at Pitt four years ago, we were wandering around the Honors College killing time, when an older guy with a scraggly beard sauntered in carrying a small brown bag. He and my husband struck up a conversation. My husband was shocked to learn that he was visiting with Doc Stewart; my husband thought he was a janitor from his demeanor. The two men had a lovely visit.

My daughter attended his lecture that day because she was planning to be a physics major. She took a semester and a half ( he did not finish the semester) of honors physics with Doc and they got acquainted. It was amusing for my daughter because he had wanted to study German and just did not have the knack for it. She had studied German in high school. She was devastated when he passed away. I was always a bit disappointed that Pitt did not reach out to those few kids who were in that last class.

ive waited a really long time to choose a school, but do you think there are still dorms available in towers now? i dont know how fast they fill up or anything.

Towers is all freshman so you shouldn’t have a problem (especially with Nordy hall opening up). Keep in mind that Tower C is singles, whereas A and B are doubles.

If you are a girl, you have a 1/3 chance of being placed in Holland, regardless of what you pick (might be slightly higher like 1/3.5 with the new dorm added in). So there is some benefit to sending a deposit early to ensure a good dorm.

Quick edit: There are freshman LLCs which tend to not fill up as fast. UHC to my knowledge does not turn people away. The Engineering LLC for freshman did not reach capacity last year either.

I agree about the presentation - last year our entire family was in agreement that the Dean was boring and even seemed unprepared. We chalked it up to his newness. He did nothing to sell us on the honors program but his presentation was such a small portion of day it did not turn DS off (fortunately). :)

Yes, Awesome, I texted my D, who is a junior, and asked her what she knew about the Dean. Her response? I hate him! Just does not throw those words around lightly.

Is Holland a female dorm? Are there no singles in Sutherland?

Holland is an all female dorm. No singles in Sutherland (unless you are the RA). Sutherland is doubles and suites. Singles can be found in Tower C.

I just submitted my enrollment deposit today…how long should it be before I get word on how to apply for housing?

And…do you all think Honors housing will still be open?

Just to clarify, this year apparently they DO.

This is the first year, since they have moved to Sutherland, that they have denied people entrance! Although my freshman year when we were in Forbes, something like 300-400 people applied for about 250 spots. So they have turned away multiple people in the past, I suppose.

We were on campus June 13-14, and thought it looked like a lot more work needed to be done on Nordy Hall before it will be move in ready. I sure hope they have a contingency plan.
