What does “charisma” mean regarding picking a major??
it means how the major is being seen by others. ex: it is a cool major etc…
Hot chicks / hot guys may not differentiate too much based on whether you are hunkered down in the library all weekend designing:
Chemical = distillation tower
Mechanical = beam
Industrial = factory process
Civil = concrete project, maybe a canoe
Electrical = some electrical circuit
It would be most helpful if you have a remote interest in what you are studying so when you leave the library and go hang at the student center or pub you are cheerful and charismatic.
Which one do you think is cool ? If you don’t know, maybe spend a few hours on your tablet looking at school websites and information on what each of these typically do.
All engineers are cool. Aren’t we? Anybody? Bueller?
Don’t pick a field based on salary. They all do fine. As for prospect, these are all what I call the traditional engineering fields and they are all pretty solid and flexible. Outside of these 5, you get into some specialization which requires a little more research and planning to be sure you are headed where you want to be.
Whoo hoo, yes, we’re cool!
Well, I would have to say that a bunch of structural engineers standing around drinking beer is kind of funny. None of us could keep the conversation going…
So were you looking at your shoes, or the shoes of the person you were talking too? I really know what my shoes look like FWIW.
Choose the one that pays the most, that every one else thinks is cool, but you hate day in and day out. In all seriousness, besides prospects, and they’re all decent, the listed criteria have ZERO usefulness.
Lottery winners who win the big prize make the most money!!!
Makes as good an answer as you’re going to get to your question.
Engineers do what they do because they like what they do. Most will make a higher end “living wage”; meaning you do OK moneywise. If you are thinking about just money, then, as an engineer, you will always be jealous of other professions that are riskier but make more money. By riskier, I mean that many young people may decide to be a rich and famous doctor but a lot who try for medical school never make the cut.
As eyemgh is pointing out. Do what you like to do, whether it is engineering or not. You’ll be much better off in many ways.
My BIL picked chemical engineering based on some stat he got about being the highest-paying, but then he graduated; the jobs were few and far between, but the pay was high, when he had a job. So he went to grad school, then had a harder time finding a job. Moved about 10 times. He’s finally found a long term job but he had to compromise a lot of things on his wish list.
Don’t go into any kind of engineering if you have neither the passion nor the drive. You’ll be, at best, mediocre and will struggle to develop and gain competence, as well as any confidence from your coworkers.
Charisma? Clearly that’s Nuclear Engineering! We’re HOT, HOT, HOT!..(and maybe a tad radioactive).

The Future’s So Bright, I Gotta Wear Shades.
I study nuclear science, I love my classes
I got a crazy teacher who wears dark glasses
Things are going great, and they’re only getting better
I’m doing all right, getting good grades
The future’s so bright I gotta wear shades
I gotta job waiting for my graduation
Fifty thou a year will buy a lotta beer
Things are going great, and they’re only getting better
I’m doing all right, getting good grades
The future’s so bright I gotta wear shades
I’m heavenly blessed and worldy wise
I’m a peeping-tom techy with x-ray eyes
Things are going great, and they’re only getting better
I’m doing all right, getting good grades
The future’s so bright I gotta wear shades
Yeah, I’m doing all right, getting good grades
The future’s so bright I gotta wear shades
I’m doing all right, getting good grades
The future’s so bright I gotta wear shades
Yeah I’m doing all right, getting good grades
The future’s so bright I gotta wear shades
I gotta wear shades, I gotta wear shades
Gotta wear shades, got to wear shades
I’m heavenly blessed and worldy wise
I’m a peeping tom techy with x-ray eyes…
“It means how the major is being seen by others. ex: it is a cool major etc…” - For the most part, probably only engineers think that engineering is cool. The rest of the world probably looks at us as one career category w/o thought of ME vs EE etc.
Don’t consider engineering unless you think you will have the drive to survive the intense academics (lots of math and challenging problem set homework).
