Which essay to use for my common app?

I have 2 common app essays. 1 is a emotional one about a family member and another is a light-hearted one about how I learned to make computers. I’m using the computer one for most of my colleges that don’t have a separate “why major” essay or give me any chance to elaborate on my computers in the supplements.

But some colleges like Columbia only have 300 words for the “why major” essay. I was going to use the computer essay for the common app and then talk about my experience with computer science at an internship last summer for these 300 words but then I was thinking should I use my other common app essay for columbia and then talk about my computers and computer science experience with these 300 words? Or should I use the computer common app essay for columbia and then just talk about my summer experience in these 300 words. I was thinking of doing the first because it makes my app more varied but then the second way makes my app more focused right?

I think varied > focused, especially considering that your extracurriculars and the classes you’ve taken might be able to show focus without your essay having to do it.
