Which essay topic would work better? Ballet or asian food market? PLS HELP!!!

I’m applying ED to GWU this fall and I’m in the process of drafting my essays. So far I have 2 main topics I’m writing about. However, I’m not sure if they are even good enough to turn in. I have nothing really interesting about me so this is all I have.

Essay 1: I started ballet when I was 12, which is a really late age to start at. I had to dance with 7-8 year olds and it discouraged me a lot, I also faced a lot of criticism from teachers because of my age. I managed to work hard enough to be placed in my age group in only 2 years. I’ll go into more detail about setbacks and such. This essay corresponds with the common app prompt “a hardship you have overcome”.

Essay 2: I grew up in a predominantly white area in Northern VA where it is really hard to interact with people who share the same culture as me. (I’ll be rewording this in a more respectful way) Growing up, the only real exposure I had to filipino and asian culture was the asian food market that my mom took me to. I am going to go into more depth about what it meant to me.

Please let me know what I can improve on, thanks!

i’m personally more interested in reading essay 2 - it’s an experience that’s truly unique to you and can be executed very well, plus isn’t something that can be echoed on the rest of your application (unlike ballet). the first one, although an experience that is very valid, is an example i have come across a few times. i feel like both essays could be very well written, but the second one is something that genuinely sounds personal and interesting

I think either might work. What my son did was write both essays. He ended up feeling strongly that one worked much better as his main essay, but he ended up tweaking the second essay about what his favorite EC was.
