Which extracurricular activities stand out to colleges?

I'm currently a sophomore in high school and I'm on the soccer team, plays flute, and volunteers at various places during the summer. What other organizations or clubs should I join or initiate? Thanks~

Join honor societies or perhaps try to get any officer positions you can in your student government. Schools like that you didn’t just join random cubs your senior year because it’s obvious that you just joined for all the “wrong” reasons. Also, make sure that you can actually talk about your community service, like in an essay, about how its impacted your life and your community, because most scholarships can see through BS. Otherwise, the fact that you play a sport and instrument is fantastic.

Oh, so something like student council? But what if our school’s student council requires too much? And if I stay in the same club or team for all 4 years in high school, does it mean something to the colleges even if we didn’t really impact the society or community? What are honor societies? What are the "wrong’’ reasons? ~Thanks.

The specific clubs dont really matter as long as it looks like you actually joined them for the right reason. Join clubs that pertain to your interests to show you have focus. For example, if you wanted to be a scientist, join the science olympiad, biology club, and science honor society. Point is, clubs arent used to show how much you can do after school, rather, is that time being used significantly.

My thread (chance pls): <a href=“Chances for Vanderbilt, UNC, NYU, UF, and Duke? - Chance Me / Match Me! - College Confidential Forums”>http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1610985-chances-for-vanderbilt-unc-nyu-uf-and-duke-p1.html</a>

But aren’t colleges looking for members in a more community influential organization? My friend and I organized a chess club, although not a lot of people are committed to the meetings, but when people show up, we have a good time. I have no interest in becoming a professional chess master, but I do enjoy challenges, haha.

The wrong reasons to join clubs are basically just to make your college application look good, which is what a lot of seniors resort to if they aren’t in any. And honor societies like the National Honor Society, are clubs for generally above average students that do a few student activities and some outside school activities that usually help the community. Also, your senior year you get a cord for graduation. But you have to check if your school has them.

As for your community service, it depends on what exactly your doing or for how long you’ve done it. For instance, over the past four years I volunteered at a genetic clinic, did relay for life, and at an abandoned animals organization, so in total I have about 560 hours. Based on all that I could write a lot about what I did and how it affected my community because a lot of colleges or scholarships ask you about that, however it is not necessary as long as you have at least 100 hours.

Oh thanks! What is a cord? And since you’ve volunteered at so many places, do you always volunteer at the same place?

No you can volunteer as many places as you want, just make sure it’s meaningful. (: And a cord is something that you put on over your gown during graduation so you don’t just have a white robe thing.

Those pretty soft ribbon thing that goes around your body? o.O

Organizing the chess club was great. You need to bring your interests to the school. Say you’re interested in business, economics etc. You could start a chapter of DECA or FBLA, or join one if it already exists. Official titles within those clubs are very valuable. Also, you can compete nationally within those clubs. Competition and leadership are obviously very important. If you can successfully organize or start something meaningful to you or the community, you will have made a valuable asset to your resume. I’m also a Sophomore and has recently started a club which is basically a music honors club. We call it the Community Ensemble, and we play for elderly homes as community service. That an idea you could go along with a few of your friends. (If you are near the Bay Area in California, message me. I can help you, and we’re expanding to other schools).

So if you were interested in business, my first idea is a great chance for you to show your interest while the second allows you to contribute to the community, more than just solo community service. Good luck!

Try to do a few things outside of the school/academic sphere. Everyone and their brother is the president and founder of 131324x clubs, volunteers, plays an instrument, is in some acronym society, etc.

That stuff is good, but if you want to stand out from the crowd you need to be different. Try sky-diving, take a commercial driving test, intern at Blackwater. Just some ideas.

What are DECA and FBLA? I wish that we can do more activities in the club, but not a lot of people are committed and participates. That’s a great club! I wish we have that at our school. No, I’m not anywhere near California otherwise I would love to participate in your activities. What’s a commercial driving test and. interning at Blackwater?

DECA and FBLA are national business club organizations. Basically you can start a chapter at your school and then, with friends, compete against other schools. DECA is more finance oriented while FBLA is more business planning oriented. Both are great, and I wish I could be part of both of them. Good luck!

Student Gov is really appreciated by colleges

What is Student Gov? Like SBA?

Many schools want to see a long term commitment to an EC and leadership. School Paper, Year Book, Varsity Sport, etc. Just find something you love and jump in with both feet. Best of luck!

How do I express leadership?
