And what were you saying about SAT scores?

TJHSST (Thomas Jefferson) is by far, hands down, the best high school in the country. I don't go there, but my brother does, and this year alone they are sending 14 kids to Princeton.

Really? Seems odd.

Seems odder.

the thomas jefferson they're talking about is in VA, not missouri. you've got the wrong school.

Ah. That would explain it.

Lol.

(10 Chars Lol)

Hahaha...

A fun diversion from the TJ v. Andover junk.

My school district was rated top 5 in the nation a few years back. Can;t be to bad eh?

mine is NISD..like one of the best in TX, I think.

yea, we shouldn't even be discussing the whole best high school thing.
There are SO many great high schools out there, public or private, large or small. It really depends on what you're looking for as a student

I'm sorry, but no one cares about High School. Real Men (dont know about women cause I aint one) only care about how much $$$ you make. You can go to Harvard but if you are a bum, hey you still a bum. But, if you go to a community college and become a billionaire then more power to you.

The bottom line: It's all about the bling bling , you know kids?

Enough said!

Haha, that's one way of putting it, nycschoolss.

But really, it does come down to the individual. Whatever I missed at TJ or Andover, I bet I can make up for in my four years of college. And even good ol' public school teaches lessons that come in handy later on in life.

How 'bout we avoid the debates and just answer this question..."What makes your high school kickass?" I think we'll get better responses.

hahah i think so too, but there already is a thread similar to that. it was hilarious ,really. physics teacher who's 95 who came back from retirement because the former teacher got fired for beating his wife....

I'm sorry to mention something in relation to a debate that no one seemed to be enjoying anyway, but I wanted to interject, so I will. There are a number of things that could've been said about TJ in defense of accusations from those defending Andover that weren't said. I thought about going into a detailed, statistics backed explanation, but I decided to spare you guys since this conversation has wandered anyway.

I just wanted to say, though, that there are [several] magnet schools out there that could easily match [and perhaps even blow] your expensive boarding schools [out of the water] academically. That said, your expensive boarding schools could probably blow those magnet schools out of the water as far as admissions into Ivy League institutions goes.

We're certainly not the best, but one of the top public schools in the nation, and I believe best in PA. We sent 28/~400 to Ivies this year :)

If a college gets two applications from two similarly qualified students, one from a highly elite prep school and one from a competitive public school, does one have an advantage over the other?

I'm sure that's when the essay will decide.

I've no idea... mine's at the bottom of that barrel.

I'd say the one from the highly elite prep school would get in because "competitive public school" really means very little unless it's a really really good magnet school like TJ or Stuy, but colleges know the kid from the highly elite prep school is able to handle college level work etc

I go to TJ. I am hispanic, first generation college-bound student, first generation born in the USA, I was never in the GT center, and I didn't spend hundreds of dollars to prepare myself for a test. The fact is that TJ differs from many other top schools because of the atmosphere. You can't buy your way in, you have to earn it. I'm sure Andover and other such schools are wonderful as well, but all I know is how amazing TJ is. It is true that it is not a racially diverse school, but going to TJ has been one of the best experiences I've had. And it's not just because of the "numbers". Forget about how many people go to the ivies (but i do think it was 19 students who are going to princeton, or am i wrong?, or our SAT scores, etc. TJ has an AMAZING music program-one of the best and we were named a blue-ribbon school in music. We have one of the best crew teams in the nation, this summer they rowed in the Henley Regatta (?), which is often attended by Prince William, our drama department always brings us a ton of cappies, and we have an entire extra (8th) period devoted to EC's!!! We have some of the best school spirit I have ever seen, and even our security officer has a doctorate - he's a professor at George Mason University when he's not working at TJ!!! So yea, I definitely think TJ is one of the best high schools, maybe the best public high school in the nation. It is ranked number 8 in the world, which I think is pretty cool :)
