Which is a better major: Public Health or Behavioral Healthcare?

I'm interested in both majors but don't know how to choose between the two. I like Public Health because it covers a wide array of topics but I'm also keen to Behavioral Healthcare with a concentration on Children's Mental Health (which Public Health doesn't cover). Which major will have a better job outlook with just a B.S. degree, and also which would have a better outlook with a Masters?

I guess it depends on what you want to do career-wise.

Behavioral Healthcare would take you, I imagine, a similar route to Psychology in leading to Social Work, counseling, clinical psychology, or psychiatry if you went to med school. And like Psych, you would probably need a higher degree for more job opportunities.

Whereas Public Health–if you ultimately ended up in the same Mental Health area–would lead you to careers in health policy, education, or maybe research. However, PH doesn’t limit you like BH does, so there are definitely more jobs at the B.S. and M.S. levels.

Things to keep in mind:

 1. Some schools’ PH majors have concentrations in Mental Health or Health and Behavior
 2. It’s easier, I think, to do a B.S. in Behavioral Healthcare and, if nothing comes up job-wise, a Master’s in Public Health than vice versa
